Magic in Lords of the Fallen (LotF) is a collection of spells that can be cast by the player character. In the world of Mournstead, there are three schools of magic: Rhogar governed by the chaos god Adyr, Radiant overseen by the holy god Orius, and Umbral magic of the death goddess. This page covers the basics of using spells and each spell available in the game.

Magic in Lords of the Fallen

How to Cast Spells in Lords of the Fallen

Spells can be equipped in the quick action bar to be cast, each school requires a different Catalyst to be used. Equipping a Catalyst will forego the possibility to use Ammunition or a Ranged Weapon. All spells will consume mana when cast, if the player does not have enough mana he will not be able to cast any spells.

How to Obtain Spells in Lords of the Fallen

Per the design philosophy of the game, most abilities you will see in Mournstead will be obtainable in some way. Spells can be obtained in the same way as any loot, by dropping from monsters or chests. They can also be bought from merchants. There's a special category of abilities that can be obtained by soulflaying a vestige, an afterimage of a Boss already slain.

Lords of the Fallen Schools of Magic

Inferno Spells

The magic of the god of chaos Adyr

This school focuses on fire magic, big explosive spells that deal aoe damage. DoT channeling like flamethrower spells and even infernal summons.

Radiant Spells

The holy magic of the god Orius

This school focuses on supportive magic and healing, it still has tools to deal damage, but the focus will be on buffing weapons and restorative spells.

Umbral Spells

The magic of the goddess that rules the Umbral realm

Death magic mixes both damage potential and buffing acting as a kind of middle-ground between the two other schools. It has explosive damage too as well as empowering your damage with spectral weapons and much more.

Resistances

Most enemies will have some resistance to one or more Schools of Magic. This is an important mechanic to take into account when planning a build since any specialization made by the player will result in being weaker against certain foes.

      Current findings about new spells:
Imbruing Chalice - drops from Abbesses
Lambent Feint - drops from Sin Piercer
Smiting Shield - drops from Pureblade
Explosive Snare - drops from Trapper
Seared Soul - drops from, well, Seared Soul
Did not find the rest though I suspect umbral things are found in Fief this time, since frostbite is on all of those, and my bet for Incinerating Blast is either Enchantress or Corrupted Pilgrim.

These new spells are cool but I was really hoping for some Crystal inferno spells like the Seers. Maybe next spell pack. But I am happy we at least have these since they are all fun to use.

Rising Fire is pretty interesting. It's a less effective Magma Surge in PvE (since that has way more power and a DoT lava pool after), but I can see it having use in PvP . . . whenever that gets fixed up.

Blistering Salvo is basically a shotgun; you get in close and can dish out some pretty good damage.

Neither of these are what I would call amazing; but if you get the Blistering Salvo off the first couple of Proselytes at the start of a run, it could be a very useful spell for an early Infernal build. Especially since it takes a good while to get a lot of powerful options, unlike Radiance builds

            • Can I make a request dev's. And I've posted this other places but nobody responds maybe somebody can give me an upvote to get attention it would be such a quality of life improvement if you did a quick swap feature between catalysts and throwables or bows. As it stands now in the middle of combat you have to open a menu scroll to the item you want to switch to close the menu screen all the while being attacked by mobs of enemies or another player. This is something that could be easily be fixed like a switch between the lantern and catalyst at the bottom. One more left click or up click or something like that switches between fist and catalyst for example that would make such a big difference with such little effort

To the developers.. and anyone reading this please give me a like... It would be nice if there was a way to switch from catalyst to throwables without having to open the menu and then click through the options to pick the hand or the catalyst... There's a lot of times that you want to switch between throwables and spells but you have to literally open up the menu and scroll through if there was some way to quick switch this would be a big big big quality of life help

Each of the three spell classes has a DOT and burst damage.

Radiance: bleed is a DOT, smite is a burst

Inferno: burn is a DOT, ignite is a burst

Umbral: poison is a DOT, frostbite is a burst

Umbral's damage type is Wither which does damage that is recovered when the target deals damage and frostbite halves the targets stamina (temporarily).

There is a ring that inflicts bleed whenever poison is, so pop that on a burn weapon (or two) and use the umbral spell to imbue weapons with poison and now you'll be inflicting 3 DOTs.

I would like to see more types of spells and not just Dark Souls versions.
                  Just fire, magic and healing?
It would be cool to have water, air, earth spells too. Other types.
                  More creativity!

                  • I heard in a few videos about the game that radiance spells will be mostly buffs and healing, rhogar(aka Infernal) is mostly AoE spells, and umbra spells are pure DPS. There are definitely outliers as seen in the gameplay reveals, so if this is correct, see it as a guideline instead of a rule.

The magic classes has been confirmed as the follow.

Radiance: Which uses a focus of the radiance stat, it is seemingly a mixture of buffing/healing/dmg spells that seemingly deals lightning/radiance dmg.
Infernal: Which uses a focus on the infernal stat, for now it's only been shown to mostly uses dmg dealing spells, some buffs spells and even a summoning spell.
Umbra: Which uses a focus of both the radiance and the infernal stat so far it has been shown to use dmg spells and a spell to buff weapons or summon a weapon.

It's also been mentioned that every single spell that is shown or used by enemies in the game can be gained by the player, however we will only be getting a version of the spell. So if for instance summons hundreds of swords that falls down from the sky we might get a spell that just summons a few of them.
