Runes in Lords of the Fallen (LotF) are small items inscribed with magical powers that can be inserted into socketed gear granting them an additional stat bonus. Runes can be socketed into Weapons and Shields, and depending on which one of them is used, the benefit of the selected Rune differs.
Weapons and Shields, in their base level, do not have Rune Slots. By upgrading them, players add them, being able to add up to three slots per piece of equipment.
- Please consult the Upgrades page to learn more about upgrading equipment.
Players can purchase Runes from Gerlinde, after you hand her 3 Rune Tablets
- Cracked Rune Tablet: Enable the first set of four runes (700 Vigor each)
- Chipped Rune Tablet: Enables the second set of Four Runes (3,500 Vigor each)
- Rune Tablet: Players can decide whom to give this tablet to.
Lords of the Fallen Runes Slots
As players unlock Runes, and upgrade equipment to create the needed Rune Slots, they will notice that both have distinct shapes. That is not just for show. When players want to socket a Rune into any Equipment, they will have to match the Rune shape with the one of the available Rune slot(s).
If players do not have any Rune that matches the correspondent shape, there won't be any Rune on display once the Rune's window is open. The message "You do not have any rune fitting this slot shape" will be shown.
Note that players won't be able to select the Rune Shapes they want to add to their Weapon or Shield, they are already fixed. Thus, purchasing and upgrading the same equipment piece twice won't yield different results.
Rune Shapes
There are four different Runes Shapes in Lords of the Fallen, and each of them is associated to one of the four main Stats. They are:
Runes that possess this shape are related to the Strength attribute.
Runes that possess this shape are related to the Agility attribute.
Runes that possess this shape are related to the Radiance attribute.
Runes that possess this shape are related to the Inferno attribute.
Where do I socket my Runes in Lords of the Fallen?
As previously mentioned, Runes can only be socketed into Weapons or Shields. When a player inspects a Rune, they will note that it will have a description indicating the bonus it provides once socketed into a Weapon, and the bonus it provides once socketed into a Shield. This gives players plenty of options when deciding where to socket their Runes, as well as the power to choose and experiment with different Builds.
Runes CAN NOT be socketed into Armor or Accessories. Only weapons and shields.
Using the image above as an example, Thorned Crimson Rector Sword +4 has a Rune Slot shaped like a diamond. That shape is associated with Runes that grant benefits related to the Radiance stat.
*Note that certain pieces of equipment, specially higher tier ones, have a fifth Rune Shape Slot, which allows players to socket ANY type of rune in there regardless of the shape used.

So if you have a weapon that is +10 and with only 1 or 2 rune slots, could you still get the third? Also, if you took the Sparky quest-line route, would you still be able to get the 3rd rune slot?

Anyone else wondering why the F there's no burn build up rune? o_O
A lite version of Bloodborne's runes. Not an insult, I actually like the inclusion of these. Since they confirmed they are making another game, I hope to see the runes expanded upon.

As a lot of the comments indicate runes don't properly reflect dmg changes in weapon cards. So the only way to dmg test optimal slots is to manually hit the same enemy. Just another thing that makes thing game maybe a little jankier than it needs to be.
For the people who don't understand why a Str rune would reduce the Str scaling and increase the Agi one (and vice versa for the Agi version) : it basically means that you can "turn a Str weapon into an Agi one". Let me explain, say you have 15 Str and 30 Agi, 15 Str being the minimum required to use a specific weapon you want. The weapon has B scaling in Str and C scaling in Agi. Using that kind of rune (here that would be Halsan or Oritix) would make it so the weapon would focus a bit more on your 30 Agi stat and less on you lower 15 Str. Basically making it easier for an Agi build to use a Str weapon and vice versa. Best i can do to explain it, hope it helps !

So i can confirm the strenghth runes do work. However they do not show on the weapon stats. While testing: No rune was about 454 dmg. Artiv was 475 dmg. And Ixon was 499 dmg

I've seen some people saying that quality weapons having radiance runes and slotting a radiance rune like Orimon on it will give it Radiance Scaling. This is a lie and these runes are useless even on Hallowed Condemenation that has holy damage. These runes add no scaling and if the weapon has no scaling realted to the stat increased, the runes will do nothing.
Dunno why the devs put radiance runes on weapons where they will be 100% useless, but it makes some weapons extremely lackluster since you cannot slot decent runes to enhance them

Ho messo runa dell'artigiano ma sembra che l'arma azzerando gli attributi perda forza

Why are radiant runes the only ones that are almost only beneficial to radiant builds? Crafter's essence is obviously an exception but that's the only one. Renders some weapons useless cause of it

pro tip: UMBRAL execute enemies for a guaranteed rune drop. soulflay at low hp or chuck a ton of umbral burrowers then soulflay for an easier time. unfortunately doesnt seem to work on umbral enemies though :(
It seems that none of the attribute scaling runes work at all.

is it just me or are no runes working since the update? mana Regent on killing enemy not working and it doesn't appear I'm getting any additional damage from radiance scaling runes.

Also you extract a placed rune that is already in a gear and replace it with other. The rune that was in gear before will now be back in your inventory.

Farming runes in this game suck imop. If the olny way to farm them id to pull out a enimeis soul to hit it and stun the to kill em to get a damn rune.

" I think you'll manage having ALMOST as many runes as other playstyles/builds."
I don't know why people can't understand that RUNE SLOTS are not A BUILD.
They're slots in a weapon that people use. Often NON-RADIANT weapons have Radiant slots.
Again, a Radiant build LOVES Radiant Runes because they all scale their Holy Damage.
It's when you want to use Sin-Piercer Sword on your AGILITY build and then the game is like "enjoy your 2 Radiant Rune slots that you literally can't use". That is the issue.
I swear people. "Radiant build = OP, so therefore Radiant Rune slots = Radiant Build" when it's the exact opposite. Radiant Runes are broken for anyone who ISN'T a Radiant build. My Pure Agility character has like 5 weapons I CAN'T USE because they have Radiant Rune slots. If my character was a Radiant build, I COULD USE THEM.

The whole random, shape specific aspect of this is dumb af. Also the drops for these runes are terrible. I am at the last area of the game and I have picked up 47 runes. They are just 4 different ones I have gotten over and over. I came here to see if there were other runes. Turns out there are a bunch they just never drop for me.

Is it intentional that all runes socketed into weapons and shields which are unequipped are all Unequipped when loading game data? I am playing on PS5

Why does Radiant get 6 runes (the single unique rune based on choices discounted here) while every other category has 10+ options and then for added fun the Radiant runes also have no generically good option for non-casters?
Radiant: Do you do Holy damage or use mana? No? Well literally there are no runes for you. Also we put Radiant runes in a bunch of Quality weapons.
They need to give Radiant a physical rune that's does SOMETHING for non casters. Give them the Inferno healing on hit rune or something new. Tons of weapons are basically useless because they have a Radiant (or God-forbid two) rune slot. Yes my Pure Agi character wants 2 Radiant runes in my Agility weapon that does only physical damage.

Equipping a shield on your back and two handing a weapon still gives you the buffs from the shields runes.
Just pick a lightweight shield and get some nice passive buffs from there.
- Anonymous
I know that some passive effect runes like MORE VIGOR, HEALTH REGEN, MANA REGEN can be used on off-hand weapons while main handing a two-handed one. But what about Runes that increases damage? Can I use these on my off-hand and have additional damage on my main two-handed? Like Ixon for example, that increases physical damage. Does that only increases the damage of the weapon that has the Rune or it increases the physical damage of my character?

STR rune Oritix and AGI rune Hix have their weapon effects mixed up. Hix is great for Str weapons with an agility slot.
- Anonymous
BIG TIP! if you soulflay a lowhealth enemy then beat them past their health pool they will stagger and youll do a special umbral execution which always drops a rune. each enemy drops a specific rune. it makes it super easy to farm runes you just gotta find out what enemy drops the rune you want
Slots categories are all wrong. Higher tier strength scaling rune (one can buy from blacksmith) has V shape called agility slot.

The rune tables has to be obtained in order. So you are screwed on runes if you get Rune Tablet first.
- Anonymous
Do the runes that increase one stat scaling and reduce another give higher scaling than the ones that only increase one stat scaling? If not, why would you use one that decreases another stat scaling?
- Anonymous
There are runes that decrease one scaling and increase another. They are rather expensive when you first get them. Are they better then the one the just increases scaling on one stat?

Anyone know if you can you put more then one copy or the same rune in a weapon to stack the effect, assuming it has the correct shape available. Can't find that information anywhere
- Anonymous
PSA: though the wiki does not explicitly state it, and shield marked with the META rune slot means that this slot can take ANY rune shape, yes this extends to weapons as well... i don't know why this language is never explained.. could have just written ANY rather than META
- Anonymous
Do the stats of the weapons visually update with the increase in scaling? I don't see any representation in game of that change. Kinda big oversight when a person is hoping to see how much their weapon benefits from certain runes. If anyone is able to see it, please let us know!

Please no not more rune farming, I have nightmares about bloodborne
I wish there was an ingame table showing the damage, scaling, and status buildup effects of runes on weapons. Not having that information display is a big oversight
