Umbral is a magic tree that highly specializes in damage over time(DoT) effects.

Poison weapon: This is probably strongest enhancement in the game and one of sole reasons to selecting umbral tree. The weapon debuff pairs incredibly well with Bloodbane ring. This is also your only strong spell vs Scarlet reaper boss as umbral build. The ultimate boss killer spell. Dueling wielding almost any mildy fast weapon works with the enhancement.

Umbral Guardian With braid ring(Tower of Penance ring): This spell is probably 2nd strongest spell that umbral has access to. It is guardian that bounces withered damage. This spell can easily do anywhere between 3000-7500 damage over-time when maxed out. Has slow cast-time so watch out on casting this spell recklessly in combat. Many times have I died casting this spell vs Scarlet reaper. Only cast the spell on enemy recover animation/outside of combat.

Umbral Agony: The most powerful fireball in the game. It has huge AoE, Huge Posture damage and really fast cast time. With pendent of Atrophy & Umbral Eye of Betrayed Eliard that increases healing efficiency by 25% In umbral, you can infinity cast this spell as if it were your basic attack. You can easily clear every single trash mob in the game at a range with this spell. Casting on the floor is near instant damage.

Graveyard fog: This spell only does around 1200 damage however the damage is free. The spell has long cast time so it should only be casted outside of combat/very far from enemy but simply turtle by blocking with this spell is decent way to chip at enemies hp for free.

Diminishing Missile vs Misery Missile. Diminishing Missile applies -20% defence increase for 10 seconds vs Misery Missile deals around 200 upfront damage followed by 1000 damage DoT over roughly ~15 seconds. In order for diminishing missile to be better then Misery missile, you need to do 5000 damage in 10 seconds. In Hyprid builds like Inferno/Umbral or Radiant Umbral, 5000 damage is possible but due to slow pace nature of Umbral damage output. Diminishing Missile is simply not worth it. Misery Missile has slow cast time and I suggest casting it after Umbral Agony only if you are far away from enemy.

Beyond these 5 spells, I do not think any of other Umbral spells are any good or remotely worth using. You can use Barriage of Echoes for big mobs but you could also just spam Umbral Agony. You can use Latimer's Javelin which does have better range then Umbral Agony but considering the cast time of the spell, I found the spell to be not worth using beyond early stages of the game. Overall Umbral tree is extremely one dimensional for being pure spell-caster tree of the game. You would think that there would be load of relevant spells but this does not turn out to be the case.

      • My ranking on Umbral spells. I'd say there's a 50/50 split between good and "what were they thinking?" Take it with a NG experience.
*Barrage of Echoes - I've had instances where this spell shot all the orbs at an enemy's foot and straight deleted them from existence, other times only one or two orbs will hit. Kind of a gamble, like a few other Umbral spells. Can be excellent, can be mid. C / B+ tier.
*Blood Harvest - Slow, long charge and windup. D tier.
*Diminishing Missile - 20% reduction on enemies is excellent, but I honestly did not use this.
*Flesh Tide - Low damage and a long windup, did not use.
*Graveyard Fog - Like Putrefaction but worse. Deals only wither buildup, AoE is an alright size, may make it hard to see enemies or lag your machine. C- tier.
*Grieving Gaze - Good to use on enemies closing the distance, if they go underneath the orb all the shots will hit them. B+ if they all hit, C- if not.
*Hibernal Cleave - Ice version of Seismic Slam, deals damage up front with some wither damage after and some frostbite buildup as an extra. Cost is kinda high. B- tier.
*Latimer's Javelin - I'm not sure what they were thinking with this. Does insane damage, poise damage, cost is decent, and range is excellent. You may have issues with it hitting walls though. S tier.
*Lingering Despair - I'm sure you can find some use for this, casting it then baiting enemies into it.. but I don't like it. D tier.
*Martyrdom - Cast time is long, hitbox is clunky, and it strictly stays on the ground. D tier.
*Misery Missile - This thing is nutty, does physical damage up front, then sticks a wither DoT (damage-over-time) on the enemy to the tune of 25-40%. Useful to use then smack them with other spells. A tier.
*Painful Echo - Useful to spam a few into large swaths of enemies. B tier.
*Pallid Bile - Conflagration but for umbral. I did not use this honestly.
*Pestilent Blade - Didn't find much use for this, swings a weapon that does straight wither damage and adds poison buildup. D tier.
*Poison Weapon - Excellent if you're using a DW (dual wield) or poison build with Bloodbane ring. A tier.
*Puncturing Hail - It has a slow windup and the damage is nothing too special, the frostbite effect seems to take hold after 2-4 casts. C tier.
*Putrefaction - Alright to use if you set it down then wait for an enemy to get poisoned, could also fight in it. Using on unaware enemies won't aggro them. C tier.
*Septic Heave - Seems to take several hits to poison a regular enemy, by that time you can just throw a Forsaken Grenade and wait for them to choke on poison. B tier.
*Umbral Agony - Very good, has a high cast time and damage can range from medium to heavy if it lines up right. Orb goes through enemy, then explodes. B tier.
*Umbral Guardian - I honestly never used this, doesn't seem to last but 30 seconds and damage didn't seem worth it.
*Umbral Orb - Bread and butter, useable all game. A tier.
*Umbral Slash - Pretty mid, cost is high and the animation is long. C- tier.
*Umbral Weapon - Good to use, extra damage and applies wither damage effect. A tier.

          For the new spells

          NEW SPELLS PACK 1

Pallid bile drops from Womb of Despair mobs
( good place to farm is to go to the area before you fight pieta and stay in umbral until creatures start spawning, there is an area before the boss where the umbral eye closes and despawns enemies in case you are overwhelmed, a lot of the enemies that spawn are wombs of despair ) OP if you use 2 bloodbane rings to also proc bleed like crazy , melts boses HP

Vortex of torment drops from Scourged Sister mobs ( near Abbey Vestige of Rosamund going up the mountain you find 1 that you can farm )

Blistering Salvo drops from Proselyte enemies, also good to farm before Pieta boss fight

The Tolling drops from Receiver of Sacred Resonance enemies ( good to farm at the Leprosarium Vestige of Brother Jeremiah , there is one in the chamber where you find the antediluvian chisel )

Rising Fire from Infernal Enchantress ( best place to farm is before the Spurned Progeny boss , you can place a vestige seed before the arena, and just run toward the enchantress behind you and murder until it drops )

Septic Heave drops from Shuja Striders in the Fen ( best place to farm is to go from the vestige to the shortcut used for the early Deralium farm route, go down to where Kukajin and a large Bonfire is, and murder the shuja strider near there ) .

Pallid Bile + 2 Bloodbane rings, OP , especially vs boses, melts their hp like crazy you proc an insane amount of bleed and poison

            • Anonymous

Found 2 Umbral Spells that probably got added with the last update. One was in my inventory and the other was a drop from the Shuja in the Swamp:
-Pallid Bile: Unleash a torrent of Umbral magic, inflicting wither damage and poison buildup (Channeled like Lucent beam. Builds up Poison very quickly)
-Septic Heave: Hurl several putrid orbs which inflict physical damage and poison buildup (The 3 projectile barrage Shuja striders do. Staggers enemies most of the time)

Only a couple of the spells are actually realistically useable in PvE, many of them simply underperform making those few the only worthwhile choices. PvP-wise, it's pretty terrible all around.

Why umbral has 19 spells while radiant and inferno get 20 spells ? Elianne should give a spell with ther remembrance .

                  • Anonymous

I think it’s a missed opportunity that we don’t get a spell from Elianne’s remembrance. Every other boss rewards a spell and considering there are 20 radiant and 20 inferno spells but only 19 umbral spells, I think it would’ve been a perfect opportunity to reward the player with a powerful umbral spell especially considering she is a final boss. But that’s just my opinion.

Great spells for PvE, not so much utility for PvP. Also, this could be a bug, but the poison imbuement also seems to imbue my spells with poison and increase their damage... (tried with the simple projectile spell)

                      Anyone else experienced this?

                      • Anonymous

umbral slash , umbral agony, painful echo, became available at molhu after activating the vestiges at manse/path of devotion (clearing upper pilgrim with the bell key in the process, depths boss defeated as well as taking the elevator from skin boss to activate upper calrath wasnt enough to trigger those spells appearing, dont know if those also must happen)

                        • Anonymous

Kinda weird spell school. It's not bad, even with low investment damage is pretty good, and poison weapon gives like 100AR at base stats which is very very good early. It has strong debuff spell, one regular missile spell and one missile spell that forks to other targets. You also get like 4 spells from bosses. Spear is good. But compared to radiance or inferno it doesn't feel that cool or fun to use. It's doesn't flow well.
