When petting the dog I noticed the loading symbol always pops up after petting the dog 8 times. So my guess is that the stick powers up after every eighth pet. Might need data miners to determine what the upper limit is or at least maybe if the loading symbol stops popping up you will know you hit the limit.

You have to pet the dog a ridiculous amount of times for the power of the Stick to become OP. Here's is a little tip that worked for me. I downloaded a Auto KeyBoard and set the key to auto press the letter E after i placed my character in front of the dog wearing the Thehk-Ihir's Armor set and having the stick equipped in the left hand and the weapon of choice, in this case the Gilded Bucket, in the right hand. Set the key to press and infinite amount of times. Turn you graphical setting down low as you will be leaving your game sitting while you sleep or are away at work you will be pettting the dog. Also turn off any sleep mode function or display time out functions. Now you wont have to sit there and pet the dog all day to grant the Stick its special power.

They broke this with the last patch. No effects anymore and it does 57 damage a hit instead of the 257 it was doing.

Really crazy of them to make a weapon that one-shots everything if you log over 999 hours play time

Even with the secret random buffs you get while wearing his armor set and having petted the dog over a hundred times, the damage is still pitifully low. Joke weapon that is outclassed by literally any other weapon in the game. Buff those

Devs said this is best weapon in the game. Finish quest. Get armor. Pet dog. Upgrade.

the stick has a secret, if you complete all the dialog and quest of the merchant and get his armor you can then go pet the dog in the main hub several times and when you fight with the armor equipped the stick will buff itself with random effects every 2 or 3 hits.

This weapon belongs in a trash heap. Garbage rune slots, the special effect locks you into wearing one of the lightest armor sets in the game. The damage you get from the special effect's buffs is hot garbage and will overwrite any active weapon buffs you might have on. Trash tier scaling, slow hammer moveset, and on top of that you only get the special near the *end* of your game cycle. And! And on top of that, the special effect is removed in NG+ until you've unlocked the dog again and started petting it. If you want a "joke" weapon that's actually good and worth using, do the Bucketlord quest. The golden bucket is insanely strong if you build around it correctly, while this disappointment fails to ever rise up past being a joke weapon.
