Where to Find Catrin's Missing Pendant

You will first encounter Byron at Pilgrim's Perch, in front of the Vestige of Blind Agatha. At this point, he will not formally introduce himself yet. Instead, he will notice the Umbral Lamp that you're carrying. He informs you that if you ever end up earning a Vestige, he will tend to it. Vestiges are special markers that indicate where previous Lampbearers have fallen, as if telling the Deathless One of their inescapable fate.

He also mentions how the Rhogar and Hallowed Sentinels will show enough horror, but it will not come close to what the Umbral Lamp will bring. He also warns you of peering into the past, as the past may take hold of you. We believe that he means this literally, as enemies can attack you while treading the Umbral Realm. He wouldn't say much for now but the Deathless One will surely meet Byron in the near future.

Once you reach Forsaken Fen and activate the Vestige of Valade, you will find Byron standing next to it. He greets you in a manner that is friendly while jesting that he's hoping that your march onwards is not for glory, as you wouldn't find it in Mournstead. He is also against the Hallowed Sentinels and he believes that they're no better than the Rhogar. Byron will point out your affiliation with Orius, and the Umbral Lamp that was granted to you.

Byron knows that the Umbral Lamp is a powerful tool, and sweet temptation as that may be, he reminds you not to confuse it with loyalty, or rather permanence. It appears that Byron has a first-hand experience with the Umbral Lamp as he was grateful to the Umbral Lamp for what it had done for him, without indicating it specifically, and so he said he would mind the Vestiges for as long as he's around. Byron appears grateful for the Umbral Lamp, Orius, and his power but is still wary of its presence. Then, he will finally introduce himself.

After a long journey from Forsaken Fen, you will encounter an enraged Byron at Sunless Skein next to the Vestige of Catrin. He explains that this Vestige marks where Catrin fell, who was once a Lampbearer, and his lover. Byron shares a piece of his life, the time when he and Catrin were once Hallowed Sentinels and fell in love with each other (this explains why he said before that they are no better than the Rhogar). A love between the Hallowed Sentinels is forbidden, so when the order found out about their relationship, they paid for their "sin" with agony.

Byron and Catrin were sentenced to death by the order, but it was only Catrin's heart that had stopped, but not for long, because of the Umbral Lamp. Catrin was able to live life again as a Lampbearer for a while. Eventually, she stopped coming back to the realm of the living, and the Vestige was put in place to mark her true death in Sunless Skein. He will then ask you to report to him if you find any trace of the Missing Pendant. This conversation with Byron will give you x1 Bemoaning Gesture.

As you head forward and complete missions for the Deathless One, you will find Catrin's Pendant in the inventory of a Merchant named Winterberry. Winterberry can initially be found in the tunnels in Revelation Depths. After defeating the Skinstealer Boss, take the Drainage Control Key from them and use it to reduce the water level in the cistern. Doing this will give you access to the depths where Winterberry is located.

When you encounter the Merchants, you will discover that they have Catrin's Pendant, but the item is not for sale. This encounter will give you 1x Celebration Gesture. When you return to Byron at Sunless Skein to report your findings, he will surrender and say that Winterberry is not a monster, and will relent on punishing the thief who took Catrin's pendant. This will cause both of them to move into the Hub at Skyrest Bridge, and Winterberry will become available as a Merchant again.

When you get to Skyrest Bridge, speak with Byron about his plans. He will reveal that he wants to seek peace and will take Winterberry under his protection while letting him keep the pendant. This will give you x1 Umbral Eye of Ethryg as a reward. It will be a good idea to exhaust Byron's dialogues as this will cause his armor set and 1x Byron's Shovel to be available for purchase in Winterberry's expanded inventory.

NOTE: If you explore Upper Calrath without informing Byron of Winterberry's true intention, then Byron will move to the Upper Calrath, near the Vestige of the Forgotten Guardian while Winterberry disappears from your world forever, leaving his bloody backpack behind. When this happens, Byron ends up killing Winterberry while thinking that he killed the monster. When you find what remains of Winterberry, you will have the option to reveal to Byron the truth or stay silent about it and let him believe that he killed the "monster" who took the pendant.

If you tell Byron the truth, he will disappear from the world forever and he will leave Byron's Shovel and Catrin's Pendant on a rocky path on the edge of a precipice in the Manse of the Hallowed Brothers. You will also find a nearby stigma that reveals the relationship between Byron and Catrin.
