The Paladin's Request is a Quest in Lords of the Fallen (LotF). The Paladin's Request will unlock a special Dark Crusader class when completed and it begins by locating a piece of item that describes the fate of the previous Dark Crusader that had fallen before you. Players can complete various tasks such as Quests, which are the different missions or requests that players are given in the game. Quests can be acquired by progressing the game's story which triggers events or conditions, or by interacting with NPCs and accepting their requests.

Some Quests are accessible only in the Umbral Realm in certain Locations and require the player to cross over. For more in-depth information about the Locations in Lords of the Fallen, visit our page here.

How to Start The Paladin's Request

  • The Paladin's Request can be started early on in the game at Defiled Sepulchre and turning right after the arena where you fought the Lightreaper. This can be initiated after picking up the x1 Flayed Skin and peering into the Umbral Realm where you see a broken bridge.
  • Nearest Vestige: Vestige of Ranik

The Paladin's Request Quest Information

  • Relevant NPCs: Paladin Isaac
  • Objective Item(s): x1 Flayed Skin
  • Important note: To complete this quest, you must summon Paladin Isaac at the final Lightreaper boss fight. This means you cannot kill the boss in previous encounters to finish this quest. Additionally, if you choose to summon Paladin Isaac, you will lock completion of the Kukajin of The Envenomed quest which requires Kukajin to be summoned at the Lightreaper boss fight.

The Paladin's Request Quest Walkthrough

Paladin Isaac's quest can be started early on during the game's tutorial location in Defiled Sepulchre. From the Vestige of Ranik, run down the hill and turn right after the arena where you fought the Lightreaper. Walk towards the edge and pick up the x1 Flayed Skin. This will initiate the quest and make sure to peer into the Umbral Realm where you see a broken bridge that is inaccessible at the moment. This quest will involve a long series of uncovering Stigmas that will tell the tale of Isaac, the fallen lampbearer before you, and earn the Paladin Set.

Interact by soulflaying the following Stigmas on these Locations (Guide below):

These locations are part of the storyline and they are unmissable. When you view the last stigma, players will get access to a new arena in Path of Devotion, that can only be traveled to while in the Umbral Realm. To begin, the first Stigma is near the burning city accessible after exploring Fitzroy's Gorge. From the Vestige of Sebastian, walk down the stairs and turn right where you see a broken bridge. Cross over the Umbral Realm and walk over the bone bridge to access the first Stigma on the other side. You will get the Wooden Dark Crusader Cross.

The second and third Stigmas are found in Fief of the Chill Curse. You will need to obtain the Fief Key to unlock the door to this area and you can do this by progressing the NPC questline of  Andreas of Ebb. This stigma is located right next to the Vestige of Svornil where it shows the Dark Crusader praying. After defeating the boss in this area, which is The Hollow Crow, you can now get access to the third stigma and this area is also conveniently near the Vestige of Loash. Exit the arena where you see a lit torch by the archway then jump down the ladder. Scale the edge of the narrow platform to your left and then jump down the ladder again at the end of the path. Once you are outside and see a broken wooden bridge, cross to the Umbral Realm and walk up the hill. The third Stigma is found on the right section of the riverbed.

Then, the last Stigma required to unlock the Dark Crusader class and the Paladin Set can be found in Path of Devotion. You can access this area by using the Pilgrim's Perch Key that can be bought from Stomund. From the Vestige of Blind Agatha, you will need to make your way through the caves until you get to the door and unlock it using the key to gain entry to Path of Devotion. Once inside, begin from the Vestige of Dieter, and follow the rooted and muddy path to the left until you see a cliff that overlooks the land. Then, you will notice moths that are gathered near the edge. Cross over the Umbral Realm and soulflay the final stigma here.

Finally, after soulflaying all of the required Stigma, you will now gain access to an arena where you will fight Paladin's Burden boss. Head down the path where you will encounter a number of enemies. It is up to you if you wanna run down and escape these enemies but make sure to kill the archer as they are free to shoot you while you're fighting down in the arena. After that, cross over to the Umbral Realm and go to the left side where you see a bone bridge. Soulflay the tumor to extend the bridge and this will give you access to the arena that you just unlocked. In the middle of the arena, soulflay the Stigma and instead of the usual remnants, you will be fighting the boss. Progress this quest by defeating the Paladin's Burden and you will acquire the following items:

With the Umbral-Tinged Flayed Skin, return to the area where you picked up the Flayed Skin, just past the Vestige of Ranik. Using the item that you just got from defeating the Paladin's Burden, you can now loot the Paladin Set including the following items:

To complete this quest, the final step is to summon Paladin Isaac as an ally and defeat The Lightreaper together. Doing this will unlock the Dark Crusader class that you can use for your NG+ as well as additional items for the class:

NOTE: If you happened to have defeated the Lightreaper and failed to summon Paladin Isaac before the fight, you will lose your chance to unlock this special class. You will have to try it again in a new playthrough, on a new character, or NG+. This is also the case if you have started the Lightreaper Boss fight but haven't defeated him, so be sure to follow the Quest steps and defeat Paladin Isaac before entering the Lightreaper's Boss Arena or he will no longer show up as a Summon.

If the Lightreaper is not showing up in the arena, it is possible that you missed the Umbral Tumor that is blocking off the fight. You can trigger the fight against the Lightreaper by destroying the Umbral Tumor in one of the pillars on the second level balcony within the arena, if the Lightreaper is not showing up. You can access this area by walking along the catwalk.

If youre like me, and died on the lightreaper boss once to see him, only to have him not show up; make sure youve gone and picked up his armor in the starting zone... then he'll appear as a summon

So I did the quest, got to the Lightreaper final fight but I can't summon him. Is there anything that can fail this quest despite following it step by step? Maybe not encountering the Lightreaper in all possible locations?

There are some obscure fail conditions for this quest.

I did it prior thankfully in my first run, but on a recent run I basically ignored stuff until the end. This is just to make people aware.

Somewhere along the lines the stigmas will not show up any longer if you pass them.

I progressed the game up to the last lightreaper fight. Decided to go back for do stuff, but no stigmas available. Also doing umbral ending atm.

I don't know where it makes the stigmas no longer available if you progress too far, or it's a bug. Just know this is a thing.

Mad people in this comment section acting like they never played a souls game before haha! These quests are always this convoluted, this isn't anything that wildly different

You have to to a ****ing obscure and obnoxius quest to unlock a boss weapon art ? WHat kind of steaming pile of **** is that ? Not only that you have to do all the steps but if you don't do the last one Like for example if I want a challenge because the bosses are already easy enough I have to summon a ****ing dork otherwise I fail the quest . Who is the ****ing designer that suffered so much in his childhood to go out of their way for this ?! Im so tired of this game already .

lol I did all that without realizing that you can summon an new npc for the fight. All these quest requirements are so stupid. I don't care anymore.

Beat Lightreaper with Paladin Isaac, got trophy... Lightreaper Swords +9 and still no Special combo attack :(((

I did the whole quest, I expected to see Isaac's summon sign before Lightreaper, but I didn't. I hadn't checked the wiki, so I thought maybe Andreas was just enough. I wouldn't mind at all but it's downright stupid to make me do the whole quest and not give me the starting class, just because I was skilled enough to kill the boss at my first try. A friend of mine had his game crashed mid boss fight, and he says that he didn't see Isaac's summon sign either. I feel cheated, because I went through all that crap for a starting class, in the end I got nothing because of stupid quest design.

back up your save; fight lightreaper with one of the two (Kukajin or Isaac) then redownload the backed up save and do the fight again with the other character.

no need to ng+ to get both achievements.

Lmao Isaac is such a jobber, it's a pretty funny bit by the devs to have him be a mandatory summon for a trophy for the boss that killed him at the start of the game only to be precisely as useless and outmatched as he was in the intro.

I was looking for paladin to summon near the boss and it wasnt there. so i went and killed him... What a stupid quest design.

Why does this game penalize you for killing bosses? I killed this guy on the second try now im locked out of the Crusader quest and the special move for these.

Is this quest necessary before fighting the Lightreaper in Calrath to unlock the special move for the Lightreaper's swords?

                                What does this mean :

Doing this will unlock the Dark Crusader class that you can use for your NG+ as well as additional items for the class:

                                Paladin's Pendant
                                Radiantburst Parchment

                                Pendant only for NG+ ?

                                • Anonymous

His summon is to the right of the arena entrance, didn't show up for me unti I engaged the boss once. So you have to enter the arena and either die or tp out, actually some of the worst design I've seen in games.

                                  • Anonymous

Don't kill the Lightreaper until the arena fight with the summon or it fails the quest. Super lame as I tried for hours to kill him in the tutorial & all I got was punished for it. What is worse still is you fight him several time before the arena & if you kill him at any of these points it also fails the quest what smooth brain designed this?

                                    • Anonymous

Note: if you want to unlock the special ability of the night bringer swords (have to buy two and duel wield them) you must complete this quest. And upgrade both swords to +5.

Tapping L2 and R2 you'll do a unique combo which finishes with the two swords coming together and shooting forward a wave of fire, just like the boss does when you encounter him.

For more info, just look it up on Reddit. There's already a thread with linked videos demoing the unique movsets of not only these swords, but two other boss weapons as well. And there may be more to find yet.
