The Lightreaper is a Colossal Boss in Lords of the Fallen (LotF). The Lightreaper is the first boss encountered in the game but is not officially faced. He appears in search of lampbearers and is a hybrid of a Rhogar and an umbral parasite. The Lightreaper rides in mounted on a fire-breathing dragon-like creature with two heads that can cause a great amount of Burn and Ignite build-up. Defeating him during your third and final encounter will earn you the Achievement: Hunt's End. This is not an optional boss, as players need to face it to advance in Lords of the Fallen (LOTF). Bosses are powerful enemies that add challenging experiences to the game. Defeating them grants players with rare and/or unique armaments, armor, magic, and other items. In some cases, they are required to advance the story further.

The Lightreaper LOTF Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for The Lightreaper:

The Lightreaper is not intended to be defeated for the first during the first encounter when he is encountered on a dragon's back. It is part of the main progression to be defeated by The Lightreaper through his number burn and ignite attacks. He is later again encountered in Fitzroy's Gorge. The encounter begins with a breath of fire that leaves a trail that can build Ignite upon contact. The Lightreaper also has the ability to open up a portal and disappear into it to reappear elsewhere in the combat area and catch you by surprise. While mounted, the winged mount can also dive and knock you down if you are caught in the landing area. You can dodge out of the way to avoid contact and damage. For the first part, continue to avoid its fire breath until the Lightreaper hops off his mount.

Stay close for when he unmounts himself. There will be a brief idle period before he begins his first action, usually by finding a position in the combat area. While on foot, the Lightreaper wields a set of dual blades that can deploy a ranged attack. he is also able to cover distances very quickly while dealing a combination of melee attacks. On foot, he will have great mobility and speed and will be able to dash while attacking.

With each proceeding melee attack, you will be able to keep backing up or blocking them while waiting for the attack animation to complete. If you return to this location following its defeat, the Lightreaper can no longer be found here. After defeating the Lightreaper at this location (Fritroy's Gorge), the boss will disappear and he will move on to the next location at the outskirts of Bramis Castle- Upper Calrath Plaza, where the final encounter will be.

Upper Calrath Plaza

During the third encounter, he will display the same attacks and actions for the most part so you can deal with him the same way. However, during this encounter, the Lightreaper will have the ability to slowly recover himself throughout the fight until you destroy the Umbral entity above the fight otherwise it will be difficult to make progress during the fight. This is a unique feature of the encounter in this location.

Once you return to face him, make sure you stay close and approach him aggressively. Learn his attacks so you can dodge accordingly. At a distance, you can rely on ranged attacks. He generally also dashes away before dealing a ranged attack.

The Lightreaper Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Mount
Fire Breath The Mount spews a line of fire that can cause Ignite and Burn leaving a trail that can also affect those in contact. Run out of the path of fire and steer clear of the fiery/magma trail it leaves
Dive A Dive attack done by the mount while airborne. It has the ability to swoop down Sprint away from the anticipated landing area based on the direction of the dive.  This move can be deflected, will stop the mount part if done successfully.
Foot
Dual Blade ranged slash With a swift move of both of his blades, he releases a projectile arc that moves in a linear direction. Quickly dodge to either side. It is a relatively narrow attack, so you should have enough time if you have some distance between.
Dual Blade Swing A melee swing using blade Block or dodge this attack
Double Swing Another melee swinging attack where he uses both blades and swings them one after the other This attack can occur in a sequence so continue to block or keep backing up until the combo is done.
Strike down A melee attack where he strikes his blade and stabs down toward the ground  Dodge away from the area directly in front of the Lightreaper.
Pounce A leaping attack where he leaps in the area and makes a hard landing on the ground.  React as soon as The Lightreaper leaps, and move in the opposite direction of his leap or toward the spot where he lept from.
Thrust The Lightreaper can charge with his sword pointed out Roll to the side of the attack.
Spin Attack The Lightreaper spins while advancing and holing its blades up, cutting those in its path Dodge back away as he approaches or block the attack as it plays out.
Fire Spread The Lightreaper can spread lines of fire in different directions.  You can easily run out of the flames even once hit to avoid the continuous burn effects. However, you are also temporarily confined to the gap it left in between the trails of fire.
Fire AoE An explosion of fire that spreads outwards This can be blocked, but you will gain Wither.
Fire Spin Combo An aerial spin that releases a few fiery projectiles followed by a firey AoE strike  A few different things to look out for here, but as soon as he lifts, immediately distance yourself to prepare of the coming actions of the same combo.
Rage The Lightreaper shouts into air, what triggers 3rd phase of the encounter and releases a wave of fire. Roll towards target to avoid getting hit
Unmounted Fire Breath The Lightreaper calls his mount to attack in same fashion as when he was mounted (Fire Breath) Roll to the side and avoid stepping into fire pool
One with the Mount After depleting Lightreaper's healthbars, he calls his mount to crash directly into him, causing them to die, releasing a wave of fire. Roll towards target and celebrate victory.

Still weird the game doesn't rewards you with unique items if yoh beat him early on. It actually locks you out of some quest, lmao.

I created a new character in the hopes of helping some beginners with the co-op sections, plus it's a great way to get coins, so I left otto/lightreaper alive. I ended up sticking to one player in particular all the way up to frozen spectre miniboss ( can't remember her name, grief stricken or something). After I went back to my game, I had acquired some shura spears from the drops in the co op game. Decided why not try beating the tutorial Lightreaper with them?

The results were frankly, kind of nuts. Not only was I able to (after a few hours of learning the battle), I did it with base level spears and base level damage. My character hardly leveled at all, maybe 5 levels in vit? Anyways, it can not be stated enough just how fragile lightreaper is to poison damage. If you can proc it at least 4-5 times, he will die from that alone. The tricky thing to remember is that during his first proc it's more or less a wash: The mount section makes him impervious to the tick damage despite it showing it as still going.

From there, you are proc'ing poison in about 6-8 hits. Please note however, that when I say 6-8 hits, I don't mean how many times the weapon hits them, because the spears hit multiple times when dual wielded. Put another way, you have to trigger 6-8 button presses worth of damage.

I can't think of any reason to do it as early as I did unless you just want the drip or weapons. But, if you just want to kill him at the tutorial, I can't recommend poison damage enough. That being said, this strategy of course works whenever you do decide to fight him, and it only gets easier cause you are further in the game and have higher leveled weapons and more levels into your character. Therefore a more ideal way of defeating him would be the second encounter shortly after Ruiner near the Gorge area.

But I can at least confirm that he is very doable with base level poison weapons and low level. It's not quite as impressive as base-level new character runs against him, but it's something. Just remember that if you kill Lightreaper early you lose out on Kukajin/Isaac questlines, and you lose the ability to get the special ability on that playthrough. But if you are like me and don't care about any of that and just want the challenge, Try poison.

He doesn’t leave Fitzroys gorge for me. I die and return and there’s a moth wall I need to re-enter and he’s there. I thought if you died, he would move on to the next location? Question, is there anything worth trying for after him 9n this area, like more exploring or items?

How would i know to head back to this place? Without a guide i would be hopelessly wandering around literally everywhere because there is no hint or reason for that door to be open now

                  • They should really patch out the second, third and maybe there is a fourth time where he gets on his dragon mount. Just takes up time in an already time consuming fight. Especially on my Inferno build.

To make it a bit more clear than stated above, for the last fight with him, before you head in go into umbral and climb the ladders to soulflay that parasite to shut off his health regen.

Well, this proves it. The developers of this game don't understand what makes bosses fun to engage with. They make the bosses so hyperaggressive and it's just not fun. Lightreaper doesn't give you a single inch of space or a solitary moment with which to heal. His repeated, spinning slashing attacks seem impossible to avoid and they might as well have made this fight against a flaming blender on wheels. That would've been equally fun. I legitimately don't understand the people saying they had an easy time with this boss. I'm pretty sure they're all lying to make themselves feel special or something. Even at level 150 this boss is an absolute brick wall.

I went to his final arena in Upper Calrath and he did not appear. I didnt cleansed near ray yet but it makes him optional boss If I can just go there, cleanse and then unblock the next location which is not behind his arena after getting rune of adyr right? Or I have to beat him to unblock the Brammis Gate?

I didn't fight Lightbringer, the Dragon still disappeared.

I was able to fight him twice, coming from 2 different entrances.

would like to point out that if you kill him in the tutorial the thing that the iron wayfarer takes from the lightreapers chest looks exactly like the thing molhu used to kill himself at the end of the umbral ending.

You can skip the encounter in Fitzroy's gorge, by hugging the left wall of the arena instead of going to the middle. I did this by accident on my first playthrough.

Tip: if you cant cheese his 100k HP ass on NG+ use heavy shield (0 weight rune will be perfect). He will get stuggers on your shield like you hitting wall with duals

killed him in Calrath, in the arena with the umbral entity. I killed him with an execution, without dealing with the umbral entity and I'm now stuck in the arena. Bugged.

If anyone is heading back to his previous encounters for the stigmas and can't remember how to get to the Fitzroy Gorge one, start at the Shrine of Adyr vestige and it's just a little further on

                                            • This boss can be enountered up to 4 times, with the fourth time in Upper Calrath B being a non-optional boss fight to get to the final area of Bramis Castle. This is the boss you encounter(and presumably get wrecked by) in the Defiled Sepulchre near the beginning of the game. If failed, he will next spawn next at either the Fief of the Chilled Curse, down the road, after the Hollow Crow boss fight. If you choose the other direction before Fief, you will meet him in Fitroys Gorge, in a fairly large circular arena down the road from the Ruiner Boss fight on the bridge. Both the Feif and the Fitzroy Gorge fights are also 1 time fights. If you are defeated, he will NOT respawn in this same place again. The final, repeatable fight, will be in Upper Calrath B, where you may(or may not) have fought the minor Ruiner with the large amount of hounds in an oval shaped area filled with breakables and people turned to ash. This boss will have essentially 3 phases. First phase: mounted at beginning of fight, alternating between two fire breathing passovers and two "dragon dive" attacks, always starting with fire breathing. Dodging is essential to avoid major damage. He will then dismount with the phrase "Give me that lamp!" in which he will be "on foot." He will always start his "on foot" attacks with a jump backwards and a slash attack that will shoot out a horizontal arc of fire. Be ready to dodge. He will do this mount/on foot rotation 3 times in intervals, based on his health percentage down to 50%. At near, or around 50% health, he will permanently empower himself with fire damage to all his attacks, and may occasionally summon his dragon for a fire breathing passover. He will also gain more attack types, including running around you to create a fire circle, before lunge attacking. This boss requires much dodging in both his mounted phase, and on foot phase. Personal Recommendation: 100+ in character levels(higher the better), fully upgraded gear(without Delirium Chunks, at least +4/+9 to all gear), and endgame build synergy. Co-op is not required, but recommended. Casters will have a much easier time with this boss than melee, if they keep their distance and avoid his arc and lunge attacks. However, melee can still do this boss just fine. Master your dodge timings, or if you are confident, you can parry or block the majority of his attacks on foot. He does, however, have some very large combo attacks(Similar to Skinstealer), so you must be ready to dodge multiple times, or multiple blocks/parries. Due to his large combo attacks, mastry of perfect parries and attacks in between will break his posture relatively quickly. I suggest you do not attempt to block/parry unless you have significant stamina and know his attack timings. He will attack often, and quickly.

Weirdly enough he seems to be weak to bleed. Triple damage once bleeding. Also bullshit hitboxes. But what you expect in a bugfest game?

The lightreaper didn't show up for me for his third encounter (fief of the chilled curse), should I be worried that he won't appear in his final encounter? I didn't beat him in the first 2 encounters, but I did help another player kill him in a multiplayer session so I'm worried the game somehow counted that as killing him in my save.

Probably the one challenging and well balanced fight in the game, he's a tough bastard but very satisfying to learn and play around. It's just depressing that he's so much better than the few fights you have left after him (assuming he dies in the last encounter...if you're progressing normally he's very doable by the time you hit Fief). I hope they do a pass of all the bosses soon because this dude almost felt like he was from a different game compared to everything else and made the home stretch feel very weak.

                                                                  • Anonymous

I found out WAY to late, but for those who struggles against him in the Upper Carlath-Bossfight:

There's a way to remove the Umbral Entity, which gives him additional damage-reduction!

Before entering the Boss-Room, change into the Umbral-World and look up.
You can see a Umbral-Ladder on Top-right and you just have to climb it up and destroy that Umbral-thing with your lamp.
Now you can go to the center of the Boss-Arena and destroy that Umbral-Thing, which gives him Protection.

This should make the bossfight easier. Oh! And poison is great against him!

                                                                    • Anonymous

I killed him at Fitzroy, the only thing that were in the arenas where he would've spawned were stigmas that weren't there before. My husband got him in the Fief, we had already went thru Upper Calrath in his game and the stigma wasn't there. When we went back there was a new stigma right in the middle of the arena that was about the Light reaper. And the Andreas of Ebb guy still attacked us in the alley. He got his goods but no trophy for completing his quest because obviously he didn't summon him for the fight since he killed him in the Fief. Idk, but this walk thru definitely needs a warning about killing him early. I mean why would he reappear later if you have a trophy for defeating him. It's illogical.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          Lords of Bugs strikes again!
I beat him in the final encounter in Calrath, but instead of dying, he just turned invisible. I figured he might've transferred to the umbral realm for whatever reason, but he wasn't there either. I could literally hear him breathing right next to me inside the arena but I never got the drops and was locked inside that area because the encounter didn't count as finished.
Thankfully, he returned to normal after I restarted the game, but I had to do the whole fight over again. Kinda annoying, but at least he died for real that time.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Does he spawn at Upper Calrath if I dont't die to him three times (by just skipping the Crow encounter) even if I don't cleanse the beacons?

                                                                            • Anonymous

Don't kill the Lightreaper until the arena fight with the summon or it fails some quests. Super lame as I tried for hours to kill him in the tutorial & all I got was punished for it. What is worse still is you fight him several time before the arena & if you kill him at any of these points it also fails the quests too, what smooth brain designed this?

                                                                              • Anonymous

Game actively punishes you for being good using this boss :D if you kill him too soon you miss out on 3 possible quests (tho atleast 2 of those quests conflict with each other as well)

                                                                                • Anonymous

If I kill him before his final encounter will he still be there for me to fight him in upper calrath? You can only summon for his final fight in upper calrath and both the paladin and kukajin quests requires you to summon either isaac or kukajin to complete their quests. So if killing him once early skips the final encounter I'm just letting him kill me from now on. Feels kinda dumb to basicly punish someone for taking him out early by locking them out of the quests.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I’m alittle confused about this boss. Can anyone confirm or deny that you can still fight in the last encounter at upper calrath even if you died to him the first two times?

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Wtf do I do with his umbral parasite? Wiki says to place it on a column in skyrest but I cant find it anywhere..

                                                                                      • Anonymous

How am I supposed to finish the game if I can’t get to the last area bc I apparently am not allowed to die to him 3x or he just doesn’t appear…?

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Took me around 5-6 hours of attempts save scumming to beat this guy on the first tutorial encounter with Exiled Stalker. Pretty brutal with the dual daggers short range but I only realized near the end that you can actually poison him to inflict a ton of damage if you learn to apply a lot of pressure with the poison weapon buff. If you don't play very aggressively, its very hard to land the poison.

I recommend learning how to roll his really fast double slash combo which he uses mostly in his first 2 phases. This is the thing that killed me 90% of the time, anyone who tries to clear this early fight will probably know which one i mean. You want to be be locked, do a normal dodge thumb stick towards his body to dodge the first attack, and then a double tap dodge roll aiming towards his body again. He will sometimes add a 3rd thrust which is much more reasonable to dodge.

you need to apply a ton of pressure which is the only way to apply a successful poison. Without poison you are looking at around a 20 minute fight on Exiled stalker so if you're a psycho like me, good luck.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I’ve died to him 3 times now. So his loot is gone now? Correct? Or I guess I’ll have to go into new game plus

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Is there any difference between his left/right weapons, maybe special moveset if you wear both? Or is it just trolling you to spend more?

                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Ebb boy is waiting at the doors, saying something about loyalty, but the arena is empty (well, the dogs and Ruiner are there). any idea what should i do ? Did i miss something ? because i can't figure out how to reach the castle. all five beacons are cleansed, but nothing happens :/

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I don't see it mentioned anywhere, but it seems another encounter entirely. Also, I've reached Upper Calrath super early (after lighting up only to beacons) and the Lightreaper arena in Calrath is empty, even after defeating the Hollow Crow as my third main boss (for the beacons I mean).

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

So whats happens on a second encounter? He run away after lose part of HP?
