Tancred, Master of Castigations LOTF Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Tancred, Master of Castigations:

Tancred wields a staff and shield and can deal a number of holy attacks that can build up Bleed and Smite. He deals a number of standard melee attacks with his weapons, but his special attacks are usually large ranged attacks that involve projectiles, powerful beams, and AoE attacks. In between attacks, Tancred holds his guard and can Shield strafe, decreasing his movement capabilities while his shield is drawn. If you're within range, he will use most of his basic attacks such as his staff swings, thrusts, and shield bash while strafing. These melee attacks are usually swift and quick.  As he lunges forward or strikes at you, you can actually also take the opportunity to dodge forward to get yourself in a position behind him. Make sure his combo is complete before you start to strike back and prepare for his next action. You can actually choose to block a lot of his incoming basic melee attacks and accept the Wither effect. Just make sure to regain your health eventually and strike him back soon after his sentence ends.

His larger holy attacks are more telegraphed and will take a brief moment to charge up starting with a unique animation that will give you time to react or reposition accordingly. As soon as he begins to charge up a holy attack, you can back away to give yourself more time and space to react to all of his AoE or ranged attacks. Descriptions for how each animation for the holy attacks can be found in the Attacks and Counters table.

The fight against Tancred is all about finding the right balance and looking for his patterns so you can dodge and blocks the right times, waiting for his combos too complete and being conservative with your attacks. Wait for these attack windows and you will be able to clear his Boss bar and prepare for phase 2. Phase two of this attack is done against Reinhold the Immured

Tancred, Master of Castigations Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Staff Thrust/Lunge A stabbing thrust attack with the staff. Can be performed with a lunge, giving it a longer reach.  These can be patterned so get ready to quickly react with a dodge or block. This attack is the most common one performed as he is strafing or holds his block.
Staff Swing Combo A combination of forehand swings and backhand swings that can be dealt in a sequence. Dodge or Block these series of attacks. Make sure to attack him back following a block to get rid of the Wither effect.
Shield Bash Tancred uses his shield as an offensive weapon and bashes it forward. Back away from him as he uses his shield to attack.
Shield Strike A much more powerful shield attack is where he strikes his shield into the ground and shatters the surrounding floor. A telegraphed attack where he draws his shield back before plowing it into the ground. The obvious draw back will allow you time to dodge out of the way or back up before the follow through of the attack.
Staff Strike Overhead strike dealt with his staff. This strike can pack a powerful punch and shatter the ground as it lands.  Dodge to either side or back step away from the affected area.
Charge Swing Combo An action that begins with a sprint and then follows through with a melee attack.  You will see him running at you so prepare to block or dodge as soon as he reaches you.
Holy projectiles This action begins as he summons a glowing light that can then subsequently shoot out projectiles one at a time.  Once the glowing orb is summoned, you can begin to circle around him to avoid the incoming projectiles.
Holy beam Tancred charges his staff before releasing a powerful holy beam. He can slowly shift the direction of this beam.  Dodge out of the path of the beam and continue to circle around ahead of the beam path. This could be a good opportunity to get into a better position for your next attack.
Holy Strike A strike attack done with his fists. Tanred punches his fists on the ground releasing an expanding holy attack You will be able to see this attack charge up as he draws back his arm and absorbs holy energy in the air.

Dialogue

  • Tancred: You would defile this sacred place with this horror...?
  • Reinhold: With your very own hands...
  • Tancred: Monster... Does you blasphemy know no bounds?
  • Reinhold: (chuckles) If only it were that easy

(after few seconds)

  • Reinhold: Brother... we have a guest...
  • Tancred: Another sinner...

Reinhold the Immured LOTF Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Reinhold the Immured:

As you face Reinhold the Immured you will be able to stand directly under him while attacking his limbs. Try to stick to his hind legs and watch out for its body slams. Body slams are easier to predict since he will stand up on two legs for a brief moment before slamming himself on the gound. If you wait for its approach, its regular swipe attacks, are quick and hard to predict. There's also a chance that it will leap towards you. If you get caught in the landing area, it can knock you down.

During the initial phases of the fight, you can stay close to hit him and eventually, he could fall and reveal a vulnerable point behind him. This section will glow. Target this area to deal a critical hit. You can also follow with a few standard attacks before his next action. Continue targeting its limbs while dodging its claw swipes until he starts to produce magma. At one point, his attacks or actions could leave a pool of magma underneath him, which will cause Burn. You will have to stay clear of all Magma pools left on the ground. Once he activates his fire attacks, he can now also deal a ranged magma stream attack which will spew out like a flamethrower and has a far range. Back up or dodge to either side of the liner attack. Once the area is clear of fire, you can start to run back in. Just watch out for when his limbs start to glow in preparation for his next fire attack. Continue targeting his hind legs while dodging his attacks and sprinting away from his landing area throughout the fight.

Easy victory - Inferno build

Cataclysm spell is a way to trivalize the whole encounter and skip phase transition. Simply cast at medium range and spam this spell till Reinhold's death. Due to his unique poise-related mechanic, he will be permamently stunned providing player can cast Cataclysm every 5-7 seconds

Reinhold the Immured Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Claw Swipe Reinhold has a large reach that can swipe covering a large area. He can deal a backhand or a forehand swipe. Dodge through these attacks.
Body Slam An attack where he throws his body into the ground crushing those underneath. The animation begins with him walking on two legs.  When he starts to move upright, look at which direction he faces and avoid his line of sight.
Stomp A stomping attack that can use one or two of his limbs to slam into the ground.  Dodge back away to avoid incoming damage.
Grab Reinhold grabs and eats the target. Indicated by slower hand attack Dodge back to avoid grab.
Fiery Stomp A regular stomp attack that is imbued with fire.  Dodge back away to avoid incoming damage.
Head butt Charge Reinhold sprints forward and nudges those in the way aside, knocking them over. If you're at a distance, you can see the direction of his sprint. He won't change direction mid action so you will have time to evade his path.
Leap Can be done in place or while repositioning, damaging those who remain as he lands.  Dodge in the opposite direction of his leap
Magma Leap A special attack that enhances his leap attack with Burn, leaving a pool of magma.  Watch for his glowing limbs and steer clear of the direction of his jump and the magma pool it leaves behind.
Magma Stream Like a flamethrowing attack. He spews a long-range stream of magma that can almost reach the opposite side of the arena.  Dodge to either side to evade the direction of the attack.
Scream His scream emits a shockwave of energy that can knock you back. This attack indicates the beginning of phase 2. Sprint away from him or distance yourself.

Tancred, Master of Castigations / Reinhold the Immured Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • Soundtrack: The Twice Ordained
    • Ordained refers to "granting holy orders"
  • Uniquely to most bosses, player does not have to kick/deflect/perform charged strong attack to poise break Reinhold.
    • Also, riposte on him is a 3-part move, not 2-part as in case of most bosses
  • Voice Actor: Kellen Goff
  • Original concept arts of Tancred shows him with a mace in right hand and whip in left hand.
  • Tancred and Reinhold were born outside Mournsted in Oathlands as rare instance of asymmetrical twins (situation, when twins are developed during pregnancy, but they don't separate and one eventually "absorbs" other). It was Tancred, who came victorious from this, but Reinhold somehow surived with end result of being "unalive", what is hinted by his resistance to Wither.
    • While Reinhold succumbed to Rhogar corruption, Tancred decided to pursue the career of more holy person, finally becoming a master of castigations.
    • Tancred's Armor description hints, that this corruption somehow affected Tancred too. This was probably a reason why his methods were so brutal.
  • According to the description of Tancred's Helmet, it was Reinhold who ordered the blacksmith to add face on helmet back. Tancred called this claims false, even if this was requested in his voice. This hints, that Reinhold existence was kept well hidden from some, even if they were important.
    • This explains, why blacksmith said it was Tancred's order as he was probably not aware of dark twin.

In the second phase, target the back right leg then keep really close to it, moving counter clockwise, it will break and allow a grievous attack and he won't hit you. You can run away, heal and repeat.

I love this game to death, but I've had just about all I can take of fighting health bars that kill you in three hits.

Inb4 the usual "git gud", this dude (and the others but let's keep it at Tancred for now) is balanced with ass in NG+. I'm serious, i've done SL1 runs in every souls so far and they were stupid easy in term of balance compared to this game's NG+, each bosses have like 3 times their HP and the tiniest hit possible one shots you even at 50+ levels in health. Do i want a challenge ? Yes. Do i want to force myself into a game that was developped with ass hairs ? No. And don't even consider summoning a NPC, they spawn right next to the boss and take ages to react, meanwhile this guy just did his regular staff combo three shots them. GG devs, you made the worst NG+ possible in a game.
