Mendacious Visage is a Secondary Boss and Enemy in Lords of the Fallen (LotF). Mendacious Visage appears as a giant head with limbs and can be found in the Forsaken Fen. This is an optional boss, as players do not need to defeat it to advance in Lords of the Fallen (LOTF). Bosses are powerful enemies that add challenging experiences to the game. Defeating them grants players rare and/or unique armaments, armor, magic, and other items. In some cases, they are required to advance the story further.

Where to Find Mendacious Visage Boss in Lords of the Fallen

Initial Location: Mendacious Visage is located down an optional side path within the Forsaken Fen. At the Vestige of Valade, go through the nearby shortcut gate to the large bonfire near the cave you first find Kukajin at. If you haven't opened this shortcut yet, you'll have to progress through Forsaken Fen until you do. Follow the wooden walkways past the bonfire to reach an Emergence Effigy on a higher set of wooden platforms. Walk past it to the other side of the walkway, and head underneath the archway at the end. The path will continue curving to the left underneath yet another archway, but instead of heading there, you'll want to look towards the water on the right and enter the Umbral. You'll be able to bypass the water and find some breakable vines at the end. Destroy them to reveal a hidden cave, and turn right at the other side of the cave to emerge back out. Be careful of the large, rolling tumbleweeds as you make your way up this slope. Near the end, you'll find a shortcut ladder going back down to the Emergence Effigy we mentioned earlier, but if you continue forward, you'll find a soulflayable body that opens up the way to the Mendacious Visage's boss arena.

You can also find the Mendacious Visage in the following locations as an enemy:

Mendacious Visage LOTF Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Mendacious Visage:

  • When enemy innards are not visible, aim for the back
  • Umbral Lamp is very useful during this encounter:
    • When Visage is shielded, Soulflay opens his innards
    • When Visage innards are visible, Soulflay stuns him for few seconds.
  • Recommended Spells: Umbral Spells, Inferno Spells
  • Recommended Items: Poison Salts, Poison Javelin

Mendacious Visage is a secondary boss who can do a number of melee attacks that can be laced with Frostbite. It has two main forms which can affect the attacks it deals. With its face open, it can inflict additional spells that can cause Frostbite. This is also when it's most vulnerable and most aware. The Mendacious Visage reacts to the sounds and movements you make. You can Soulflay the closed face in an attempts to make it open itself up again and induce its more vulnerable state. A number of its basic attacks can spread additional aftershocks or become AoE attacks with frostbite. These will be hard to dodge or avoid, but since it mainly attacks forward, try to get behind it and dodge back as soon as it lifts off the floor.

Players who find difficulty in approaching the Mendacious Visage are recommended to beckon another NPC for help when it becomes available or to use ranged attacks or throwable objectives. Otherwise, you can wait out its attacks. Then strike it from behind while it is on the ground. Find a pattern dodge back away during its stomping leap attacks and wait for any AoE damage to complete before running in. Most of its attacks will repeat.

You can also attempt to keep a distance to bait it to dive towards you. This attack will give you a brief window to attack while it is still on the ground.

If the arena seems too small for your liking, you can soulflay two bodies immediately as you enter the arena to open up the path to some additional wooden platforms. One body is immediately visible to you on your right as you enter the arena, while the other is tucked in an alcove in the wall to your left. Soulflaying these two bodies will destroy the Umbral Tumor blocking the slope going up to the bonfire in the background. Doing so also allows you to defeat the Shrouded Remnants throwing projectiles at you, making the fight more manageable.

Mendacious Visage Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Stomp The Mendacious Visage can leap forward and land on opponents. This will also sometimes spread. This can become an AoE attack.  Once you see the leap, back away to get out of range of the Frostbite AoE
Step Getting to close can result in it stepping on you. This only tracks for the first 2 seconds. So it can be avoided as long as you steer clear of its path.
Homing Frostbite Whiles its shell is open, it can release a homing spell that can inflict frostbite.  This attack will only trail you briefly. Step out of its path until it passes you.
Clasp While its main body is open, it can clasp shut to inflict damage.  Dodge back or back away from its immediate vicinity.
Radial Frostbite An attack that can add to frostbite build up. Streams of this spell will spread outward, inflicting frostbite upon contact The AoE is fairly small. You can back way to avoid being affected by this attack.
Fist Slam/ Dive This can be performed in place or while leaping forward in a Dive Back away to allow it land before quickly running in to attack it while its down.

    • I sure love bosses designed to punish spacing by giving them aoe on every move lol, as a spacing fan I hate this mf with passion. Totally unenjoyable

I could not poison him. Threw maybe 20 poison javelins at his open face and added poison salt to my axe twice.

Wonder if theres any way to enter this fight in "normal world" with summons, other them Umbral...
I find this a little bit hard with my pyromancer. The time he opens his head, i cant even throw a single fireball til he spit **** in me.
          Something is wrong about this.

I've had these guys as regular enemies drop plucked eyeballs without the red lantern. Not often but has happened several times now.

            • Anonymous

Best place to farm for this is Hoist, Vestige of Catrin. Lower the water, go umbral, and simply drop attack the Mendacious Visage from behind. Ez money.

Well, if anyone insists on beating this stupid fight early on like I did, here's the trick.

Soulflay the the thing to expand the arena.
Make a loop to kill the 3 ranged guys, a few walkers, and the eggs that spawn them so you can recover your health. They won't respawn.
Get on the ground level with the boss and keep your lantern out AT ALL TIMES unless you're attacking/dodging/retreating.
When he tries to bodyslam you, dodge and hit him in the ass once or twice.
He usually does his overhead slam 3 times in a row. Side dodge and whack him in the ass a few times.
When he sends out maggots back away (Lantern out) until you can make a loop and start the process over.
If you want, you can make a few loops to refill your soulflay and use it when his mouth is open for a critical.
                This fight is not fun.

DO NOT soulflay the effigy on the arena. If you do it opens up a space with more mobs that keep spamming ranged attacks on you, making the fight more miserable than it already is. It's incredible how bad this fight is. There is so much forward momemtum on weapons that make so you can't do more than 1/2 attacks on his back before going forward out of the weak zone, and he has so much hp.

I'm at the end of the game right now and i still think this was the only fight i died more than 3 times, it is really unbalanced for how early you fight it, way too much hp.

They bugged this fight now. Poison doesn't proc on him anymore. This is exactly why people do the exp exploit and other ones. Devs can't balance ****.

Lucent Beam melts these guys, like so fast it seems cheese-some. Maybe peirce and multiple hit boxes? Been farming the ruiner and visage combo way longer than I needed to because I'm so happy to just watch him crumble after the traumatic struggles he's put me through.

I hate this fight. Died like 20 times now. Feels like I do next to no damage. Maybe my build sucks. Pyro with the infernal axe

                        • Anonymous

The hell is going on with that clamo down move ? It can use it like three (!!!) times in a row, sometimes even when its stance is broken (red circle) for some reason. I lost three chances to crit in a row because the boss just decides "No Crit for you, fool !" That is just frikkin unfair boss design, sorry. The pustules in the arena respawn at least, but it takes a while. On a boss that can almost one-shot even sturdy players and that feels like a "gimmick" boss for soulflay, that is just a terrible decision. So frustrating. I open it. It closes immediately. Three times in a ****ing row. Seriously ? Gonna go the cheap route with poison jevelins then, like a damn n00b +sigh+ The idea is pretty cool, but this execution is purely unfair.

Just wait until you have to fight three of these at the same time. This game has some of the worst enemy encounters I have ever seen, pretty sure these devs don't play their own game.

                            • Anonymous

Soulflay him when his face opens up to land a critical strike and then poison him with javelins, makes the fight pretty easy!

                              • Anonymous

You can stock up on ammunition bags and use the poison javelin throwing tool (found in this level) to repeat poison him even when his face is closed, then just run around.

                                • Anonymous

if you're speced into inferno, just stock up on manastones and run around the arena lobbing fireballs at him

                                  • Anonymous

5-6 quick attacks in the face with poisoned weapon via umbral catatist - poisons it, dealing substantial damage over time.

                                    • Anonymous

It's seriously weak to grievous strike, use your lantern to pull and his face opens and then use it again to stagger him or wait out his attacks until he opens his face and use it, then go for the grievous and see huge chunks of his health disappear.
