Spurned Progeny LOTF Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Spurned Progeny:

Despite its large build, the Spurned Progeny has fairly quick reflexes and can quickly turn toward you. However, his attacks are generally still slow and telegraphed. It starts of dealing a number of basic attacks, but can eventually expand its attacks to deal ignite damage. During this fight, you will need to take note of the stairs in the area since it will have the ability to fill the first floor with magma.

To start off, you will need to watch out for his basic attacks that he will start with such as clawing and slamming. These attacks will predominantly affect the area in front of him so you can begin the fight by focusing your attacks on his back legs before he transitions to his bigger attacks. If you linger behind his back legs, just watch out for his ground slam attack. Take note of his stands and once he begins to straighten himself out and stand upright, you can expect him to follow with a slam attack where he slams his underside on the ground, crushing those underneath. If you keep to the side of its hind legs, this attack shouldn't land on you, and you should be fairly safe keeping this position while he continues to deal his standard attacks.

Phase 2

After the first part of the fight, the Spurned Progeny will progress to bigger attacks. Phase 2 occurs when about 1/3 of its health has been depleted. During this phase, the combat area will transition to the second level and you will need to put your focus on attacking its arms after each attack.

While in the main boss area, it will begin to fill the first level area with magma forcing you to find higher ground. This may not immediately affect your health upon contact, but will eventually ignite around you if you continue to linger in the pool of magma. It will also quickly fill up the Ignite Status Effect gauge. You will need to ascend the stairs to the second level and it will still be able to attack you from there using its claws. These are slow-moving attacks, and it will very obviously draw back its hands before following through with some of these attacks. You will be able to block some of these incoming basic attacks, but watch out for the larger AoE fire attack.

Inferno Sorceries will eventually be dealt in addition to its basic attacks. Once you see it produce a third arm, immediately run for cover. This arm's slam impact will cause a shockwave of fire to radiate outwards and cover a large range that will build both Burn and Ignite. During this phase, you will need to wait for its claws to rest on the second floor after each claw attack. Eventually, at about half health, it will deal a number of attacks that will cause it to rain balls of magma. The final attack during this phase will cover the second-floor combat area in a coat of lava as well, and you will be forced to relocate elsewhere on the second floor.

During this phase through your fight on the second level, watch its arms to avoid each incoming attack and as it lowers itself, stay out of the direction it faces. These attacks will take longer before they follow through, so you can distance your character or find some cover as soon as the attack animations begin. Refer to each attack description and how to avoid taking in additional damage. Eventually, the lower floor will clear up from magma, and it will be safe for you to continue focusing your attacks on its ankles until the fight ends.

Spurned Progeny Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Ground Slam The Spurned Progeny Slams its butt on the ground This attack can come suddenly but is usually anticipated after the Spurned Progeny begins to stand upright.
Fist Slam A double fist slam on the ground ahead Stay close to his back legs to avoid damage
Claw The Spurned Progeny claws the area ahead of him Avoid the area directly in front of him.
Claw Sweep It sweeps its claw across a large area You will need to back up out of its reach as it draws its hand back.
Lava Bath Spurned Progeny produces lava, that covers entire low ground You need a high ground, that can be reached by stairs
Phase 2
Ignite AoE Slam The Spurned Progeny can produce a third arm from its mouth  Distance yourself as much as you can as soon as you see it produce the third arm.
Bubbling Magma It rests its hand and produces magma that wil slowly build up and explode causing it to rain large balls of magma in the the area. When this attack begins, it will be obvious. So you will be able to take cover further away
Magma Rain Eventually, it will be able to spew balls of magma which will rain across a larger area than the explosion of the bubbling magma.  Move towards the further areas of the second floor.
Ignite burst This attack is a direct ignite attack that starts with a glow on the ground before it ignites soon after. Each of these explosions has a decent radius.  Since these attacks are large in size, you will be advised to continue to run in the available space you have as it continues to ignite.
Third Arm Reach The Spurned Progeny bends lower, bringing its head to the second level before reaching out with a third arm from its mouth. It can attempt to grab you more than once.  Once you see the Spurned Progeny lean in down to eye level, run to the side away from the direction it is facing to avoid the reach.
Third Arm Fire Orb Blast The Spurned Progeny grows a large fire orb, that turns into a massive ball before exploding into a blinding light.  This attack takes time to build up, so when you realize it beginning, run for cover. Look out for any nearby structures or walls to hide behind.

They seem to have buffed him, now hes immune or almost immune to all status effects. Tried out bleed, burn, poison, frost and ignore, no procs. Smite may work but idk

What's the implication here? How many demons are actually piloting the progeny? In the visage, it looks like just two conjoined twins in the image, but there is the main hand you battle, but in the opening cutscene it is two more hands that pry open the mouth to make room for the main hand.

Artistically, it's such an interesting concept for a boss, I was just curious what it going on inside the Progeny.

        • How is he against Frostbite? He is supposed to be weak to Wither, but for my melee I don't have Wither Salts and nobody sells them at this point in the game.
Him being immune to Poison sucks, but I was kind of cheesing bosses with that so it is time to get good.

          • I just defeated this boss. It took five or six tries. The reward badge indicates that only 36.6% of players have beaten him. No wonder I hated this guy!

            • Anonymous

Probably the only boss that I felt bad killing him: I know that he is a giant demon child, but he's still a child.

              • Anonymous

On this guy, so far only fought him + the swamp knight guy and it's all gimmick bosses. Not one straight up fight, just chasing dudes around. is this all the game is lol?.

                • Anonymous

If you're struggling with this dude as a melee / str build - buy the cheap radiance catalyst and upgrade it to +3, and the basic radiance dart spell. equip the shuja harmony loop. Phase 1 just melee his leg, phase 2 run up and spam the holy spell while dodging his magma. The loop trinket gives +15% damage for repeated spell hits, just chug mana stones constantly and the spells will shred him from a distance. dont even bother trying to get one hit at a time on his arms.

If you use the umbral lamp on him, you can sap his blue aura and deal more damage. It's best to do right after the cutscene when you enter the arena

For the love of God, he seems to have something like 5 million HP in ng+ no matter how strong you are that fight is unfair

                      • Anonymous

Bro his health in NG+ is bonkers. But I’m running inferno this time so I’m having an even tougher time…

                        • Anonymous

Raid boss mechanics. Easy enough as melee, since the moves are slow and easily dodged (avoid locking on). Third attempt.

                          • Anonymous

After the start of the second phase, pay attention - the two platforms on the second floor are connected by a path along the border of the arena. As soon as the boss approaches your balcony, you need to quickly run to the other side and shoot him while he is coming towards you. Then you won't have to deal with his hands, only with magic, which is much easier to dodge. With such tactics, the boss can be killed with any ranged weapon, but you will have to stock up on ammunition. 5 large bags were enough for me, while I used the trapper's crossbow, which spent 3 ammo per shot and deals 280 damage.

The problem is just the amount of HP. His attacks are well telegraphed and I found it mostly fair, but I'm also a dumdum sometimes and I mess up. As a melee build you just have to be excellent for way too long for it to be fun.

2 tries and I knew I'm not beating this guy "normally" as melee. Went to get Enhanced Lump Hammer and just spammed it with ammo pouches, simply obliterates him

                                • Anonymous

Felt like the easiest main boss so far (I just got to the mines). All his moves are pretty slow and easily telegraphed. No long combos. Use ranged weapon when changing platforms to get some extra damage in. I just spammed hatchets

                                  • Anonymous

25 Vitality. 575 health. 581 Physical Defence. 348 Fire Defence.

Still get one shot by any slamdown attack in phase 2.

Good boss. Very fun. Totally no overscaled damage numbers here.

With either Umbral magic or Radiant Magic this boss is easy, not sure about inferno since I've heard everything is fire resistant so I didn't try it.And this boss is pure fire , so...
But yeah radiant makes this boss and the game quite easy.

                                      • Anonymous

I bet him in NG as pure inferno build spell caster (no weapon used) , with inferno catalist +9 and inferno attribute up to 70 . Of course I tried with lower inferno stat and lower enchanted catalist ... let's say your damage is quite low to the point you want to cry...

Mana regen? ha! consumables all the way . Farming like freaking crazy. Fire ball spell is faster and you're up to 2 hits most of the time. Tried Lava burst spell, good damage but man....the casting speed is SO slow , it doesn't worth using it during combat, since you need to dodge all around the area being as much faster as possible. Light weight better than medium but still medium can be dodge fine.

                                        • Anonymous

If you're a strength build you can get 1 swing in everytime he slams the ground with his arms after you dodge. When he uses the arm in his mouth get a combo in after you finish dodging. Also, the initial explosion from the charged AoE attack does NOT damage you.

                                          • Great I put myself it the worst possible position. I am pyro in NG+ with dual dolch that never even hit the 2nd swing so melee is ****ed. I have my maxed out catalyst to the women who will set in his lair when I bet him and give it back to me. My other catalyst is only +5. My strongest bow is only +8 and its a agility bow that sucks on my build anyway.

And I did not unlock magma surge that I actually get from him, so I can not even try what one guy suggested and spam that spell with my +5 Cata, I am ****ed.

                                            • Anonymous

Surprisingly easy with a +3 bow. I'm a melee character and just used what ranged options I had and took this dude out on my 2nd attempt. His lava lake and fire explosion caught me off guard but once you know how to deal with those just keep your distance and plink away. EX Vigor :)

For STR/DEX melee builds, either be very patient in the second phase or skirmish him with ranged attacks, repositioning when he approaches you.

                                                • Anonymous

For the NG+ inferno users- get to wall and start spamming magma surges once hes close, the magma pools from the spells stack and since hes standing still those pools will eat him pretty fast (still you will need some mana regen)

                                                  • Anonymous

So this boss really isn't hard to beat.
During the first phase for melee builds, if you hug the outer side of his skeletal foot, he will almost exclusively do his swipe attack which cannot reach you when you're that close. If you're paying attention, you can actually tell from the full motion of his body what attacks he's about to use. If you can keep on his foot in around that spot(moving inward triggers him t punch the ground or slam his body down), then you can cleave through the first phase quickly enough. On the chance he does his attack were little plumes of fire shoot up under you, he'll always do it three times with the third one taking slightly longer than the other two to appear. So just pause a quick beat before you do your third dodge.

Second phase, for all of his physical attacks(hand slams, swipes, third arm reaches), watch the hand and move the moment you see it begin to come down and you will dodge it. For the hand slams, I just dodged forward into it so I could hit the arm once after. For the third arm's reaches, you know to dodge because very quickly as he retracts it, the fingers on the hand will flex open and that's your queue to quickly dodge. Same when he slams the third arm down to do the ring blast attack. That one gives you a huge opening to punish him. He never goes quickly into another attack after the openings for you to hurt him, and there's lots of recover time for your stamina to go back up so you don't have to worry about running out as long as you don't go panic dodging.

His second phase magic attacks: when you see his third hand come down and start releasing plumes of fire, it might be tempting to take the chance to hit him more, but you're best bet is to play it safe and just move on to another platform to avoid the damage. When he summons a large red orb into the air, you'll notice that the red light radiating off it has this sort of bouncing effect off the little wall fragments on the paths between platforms. That's because that's where you need to stand to protect yourself. He'll only do those at the 50% point, and when he's near death, and near death he'll just spam it.

During the last chunk of his hp when he just spams the large exploding ball, if there was a soul flay mechanic, neither I nor my friend could figure it out. Couldn't lock onto his third hand, couldn't soul play any other part of him. So I just wailed on his ankles until he died. If I couldn't kill him before the next explosion, him going to stand up was queue for me to run back up the stares and get behind the walls before I do it again. Fortunately, he takes a long time to cast it, and a long time recovering after. During the second phase, if you have a radiant catalyst, the aoe healing spell you place on the ground can help since you'll spend a good chunk of time on a single platform not really moving out of range of it(I tried to always reposition back to center after each of his attacks to help keep me in range of hitting him after them and reduce the chance of me accidentally dodging off the edge).

                                                    • Anonymous

Lots of arrows and sprinting around the upper area. Took a while, but was super easy. Just stay on the opposite side from him and move when he telegraphs his attacks. Stand behind a wall when he makes the sky explode.

                                                      • Anonymous

You need ALOT of patience to kill this boss if you're a pure melee build. After you go to the upper platform, its mostly "hit and run" for a long time.

                                                        • Anonymous

Pyromancer tip for this asswipe: Equip the ring that lets you use Radiance spells without a catalyst, keep your pyro catalyst equipped, slot in a radiant damage spell and watch it wreck him using your proper spellpower!

Otherwise, immediately run up and strafe along the top level the whole time, 3 dodges for each set of giant flame pillars, you don't have to dodge anything else. Spam mana crystals, spam that radiant and stand behind the walls you're walking around for the HUUUUUUUGE spell.

                                                          Goes down like pudding.

Not a bad boss, can only get hits in if you single dodge the attacks. rolling puts you too far away from the hitboxes

                                                            • there's not even a point to staying on the lower level if hes in his melee range and you go up all the attacks become a lot more readable and are easy to punish just stay locked onto whichever hand is moving and if he uses the face hand run to one of the side ring walls
