Lords of the Fallen Full Tower of Penance Walkthrough

Boss: Blessed Carrion Knight Sanisho

Right as you step onto the bridge from the Manse of the Hallowed Brothers leading into the Tower of Penance, you'll immediately be thrust into a boss fight fight against the Blessed Carrion Knight Sanisho. For the most part, this boss fight should be fairly simple as it's moveset consists of simple spear jabs and swings. The difficulty in this fight lies in the narrow bridge arena, giving you less space to move around. To top this off, this boss is able to perform a Poison breath attack that fills a huge area of the arena. Try to bait the boss out of the affected areas when he performs this attack, and you should be able to defeat this boss swiftly.

When defeated, the boss will drop the either the Carrion Knight Staff and/or a piece of the Carrion Knight Set, and a Vestige Seed. An Umbral Flowerbed can be found further up the bridge afterwards. Warp into the Umbral and head to the tower. Directly to the right is an Umbral Belly you can soulflay, it'll drop the Umbral Eye of Olleren. When you're ready to proceed, head to the end to find that the door leading into the tower doesn't open from this side. You'll be able to circle around to the left or to the right of the tower. If you circle around the right side of the locked tower, you'll find the Braided Ring on the ground. If you circle around the left side, you'll find a ladder going down. Follow the wooden walkway to the end and enter the Umbral. Use your lamp to pull the platform towards you, then run into the alcove to the right to avoid being knocked off by the Shrouded Sparrow that ambushes you. Head back to the platform and pull yourself across to the other side. Turn right at the end and defeat the Shrouded Sparrows here. By the cage at the corner ahead, you'll find Jeffrey's Dagger. Continue following the path, up the stairs, and you'll be able to jump back to the wooden platforms you took to get here. Follow it back to the ladder, where you'll find an Emergence Effigy you can use to return to the Axiom.

 

Descending the Tower

Head back up the ladder and continue circling around the tower. Eventually, you'll find an elevator. Before you hop on, grab the Map of the Tower of Penance found opposite to the elevator. When you take the ladder upwards, you'll be able to enter the tower through an upper archway. Right in front of you will be another Umbral Flowerbed. Past it, head through the doorway and onto some wooden platforms in the next room. Head to the end, then enter the Umbral. Soulflay the body across the way to lower a platform you can jump onto. Turn left and go down the ladder, then continue circling around and drop down to the lower platform. Stand on the small Umbral platform, then look to your left to find another one you can pull towards you. Jump onto it to continue to the next platform.

Defeat the Ardent Penitent that bursts through the nearby wooden planks, then stand on top of the ladder, don't head down it. If you look over the ledge, you'll find a lower platform you can jump to that the ladder doesn't get to. Jump down to it to find a chest that contains a Deralium Chunk within the jail cell. After grabbing it, look over to the left off the platform and jump down to the platform the ladder would have taken you to. Soulflay the body to lower the platform ahead, then enter the jail cell to find two Large Deralium Shards on a table. Defeat the Remnants and Umbral Eggs in the vicinity too. Afterwards, climb back up the ladder up to where you fought the Ardent Penitent and go to the end of the walkway. In front of you here is the Umbral platform you pulled out earlier to get to the other side. Look down, off the ledge towards the Umbral platform and you'll find a wooden platform you can safely fall onto. If you follow it into the jail cell, you'll find a chest containing a Rebirth Chrysalis. Exit the cell and jump directly down onto a stone platform.

Behind you on the stone platform, you'll find some wooden planks that can be destroyed to reveal a Stigma you can soulflay for two Umbral Scouring and the Perception Wisp. Exit the alcove and head to the left to drop down onto another platform. Be careful of the Shrouded Remnant that shoots projectiles at you as you make your way across the narrow beams, and at the end, you can pick up two Large Manastone Clusters and three Ammunition Satchels. In the jailcell, you'll also find an Emergence Effigy you can use to return to the Axiom.

Fall onto the grates below and defeat the multiple Avowed and Marksmen, as well as an Ardent Penitent. On the outer ring of this floor, you can find several items and objects of note. In the chest by a divider wall is the Rune Tablet given to either Gerlinde or Sparky to complete their quests. You can also find the Infernal Guardian Spell in a skeleton on the wall in the same area as the chest. In a different section of the ring, you can open the double doors that leads back to the bridge connecting the tower to the Manse of the Hallowed Brothers. In a small room, there'll be an Umbral Flowerbed you can set a checkpoint at if you wise.

When you're done looting, head down the ladder in the inner circle of the room and be careful of the Ardent Penitent hiding in the jail cell at the bottom that tries to knock you off. Follow the wooden walkways, defeating the Marksman if he's being a nuisance and descend the ladder at the end. Another Umbral Flowerbed can be found in the jailcell at the base of the ladder. Continue following the walkway to the end and drop down to the lower wooden platform. Be careful of the Marksman shooting at you as you continue making your way down.

Eventually you'll make it to another floor with grate flooring. In a jail cell at the opposite side of the room, you can pick up the Bramble Ring. Through the doorway on the right, you'll find an Emergence Effigy you can return to the Axiom with if you were ever knocked into the Umbral. The nearby stairs takes you upwards to a Marksman and a Carrion Knight. After dealing with them, pick up the Enhanced Poisoning Knife from the wall at the end. You can also find another Umbral Flowerbed on the small balcony through the archway on the left where the blood trail leads. Opposite to this archway, you'll find a lever that can be activated to remove an obstacle in the center of the grates downstairs.

Head down to the grates and fall down the hole in the middle of the room. Down one of the branches of the wooden platform you fall to, you'll find Pious. Continue down the walkway towards a Marksman shooting at you, then turn left and take the ladder downwards. You'll get to a third level with grate floors. Defeat the Carrion Knight that emerges from an archway, then interact with the lever next to where he emerged from. Take the ladder on the opposite side of the floor, and turn right into a jail cell. Defeat the Avowed so you can freely pick up the Assassin's Bow. Run to your right when you exit the room and quickly descend down the ladder on your right to avoid the Carrion Knight on this level.

This will take you to yet another floor with grate flooring. Pick up the Enhanced Banner Javelin of Protection and activate the lever nearby to remove the mechanism in the middle. This will allow you to fall through the hole onto the final level. You can find two Fire Salts and three Minor Fire Salts from the fireplace on the wall. There is also an altar with candles and an idol near the fireplace where you can pick up the Radiant Purifier Catalyst. The door here requires the Tancred's Key, which we will be getting in a little bit. Opposite to the door, you'll find another Emergence Effigy if you need it. Head through the open archway leading outside. Enter the Umbral and look up to soulflay a Stigma that nets you two Umbral Scouring. To your left, you can find a ladder that takes you up. Take it, and take the next ladder up. You'll get to a large area with several Remnant and a Womb of Despair. Soulflay the Umbral Belly after they've all been defeated, and you can obtain a Saintly Quintessence. When you're done in that area, return back inside the tower and down the stairs on your left. Follow the path and about halfway, you'll find an Umbral Flowerbed. Consider planting a Vestige Seed here as up ahead is a long boss fight. Continue forward and when you're ready, open the doors ahead.

 

Boss: Tancred, Master of Castigations & Reinhold the Immured

After a short cutscene, the fight against Tancred, Master of Castigations will begin. If you die to these bosses, you can ask Kukajin for help the next time you come back to rechallenge them. Her fee is 7500 Vigor for this fight.

Tancred wields a staff and a shield, and like many other Hallowed Sentinels, his attacks can build up Bleed and Smite. You can destroy the Umbral Parasite in the middle of the arena to make this fight easier. Try to stay close to him so that he uses some of his more basic and/or telegraphed melee attacks rather than his special long ranged attacks that involve projectiles, powerful beams, and large AoE.

After completely depleting his HP, you'll witness a short cutscene and the second phase of this boss fight will begin. You'll fight Reinhold the Immured, a grotesque Rhogan demon with unnatural movement. He'll have a completely different moveset, this time consisting of several arm swipes, dashes/charges, and body slams. Rather than inflicting Bleed and Smite, Reinold gains access to a breath attack and slam attack that inflicts Burn. Try to stay as close to his hind legs as you can as other than his AoE attacks, his attacks are mainly front-facing.

When both boss phases have been defeated, you'll receive Tancred's Key, a Vestige Seed, and eight Umbral Scouring. You can then enter the Umbral if you're not already in it to soulflay the boss' Stigma, granting you two more Umbral Scouring and the Remembrance of Tancred, Master of Castigations and Reinhold the Immured.

Head back out of the boss' arena and into the middle of the tower. You can now unlock the door here with Tancred's Key. Take the elevator past the door upwards and unlock the door back onto one of the floors with grate flooring. Interact with the lever on the elevator to go upwards even further, and you'll emerge out onto the fourth Hallowed Sentinel beacon. Before cleansing it, you'll find the Map of the Abbey of the Hallowed Sisters on the opposite side of the area. On the right of where you came from, you'll find some stairs going down to a cubby blocked off by some wooden planks. Take you Umbral Lamp out and shine it here to be able to move past it. The chest in this small cubby contains the Radiant Purifier Set.

Interact with the beacon to cleanse it, and you'll be done with the Tower of Penance. Return to the Manse of the Hallowed Brothers to be able to continue forward to the Abbey of the Hallowed Sisters.
