How to Free the Blacksmith and Sparky from Pilgrim's Perch Cell

After activating the Vestige of Blind Agatha, you will see an elevator opposite it that can be used to reach the lower levels of the mine. However, this elevator isn't working yet. You'll have to continue through the tunnels ahead, and you'll eventually emerge into a cavern featuring a lake. Defeat the four Pilgrims ahead, then go to the other side and defeat the other five. Before you continue any further, you can point your Umbral Lamp at the water and find some stairs going up to a side room.

Keep following the path, past the red growths on the wall, and you'll eventually get to a small room with a chest and an Umbral Flowerbed. Go past the hallway until you reach the balcony outside. At the end of the tunnel, take the ladder going down. Continue downwards, descending down the next ladder. You can cross a wooden beam on your right to find one cluster of Radiant Bolts. Nearby, you'll find a ladder going down. Descend the ladder and defeat the Pureblade, Pilgrim, and three Radiant Hounds at the bottom. After eliminating them, pick up the items that they will drop, including a 1x Prison Cell Key. You can hear some hammering in the distance, indicating the presence of the Blacksmith. As you explore the depths of the mine, you will find the Blacksmith is locked inside a cell.

As you approach the cell, she will complain about the sentinels, their bells, how they insult her skills, and that they have made a slave of her. Then, "Sparky" will speak out of nowhere and say: "You made a slave of me" whereas Gerlinde will respond by saying "You don't count." After exhausting her dialogues, she will tell you to hand over "that" key. Then, you will get an option to hand over the Prison Cell Key (the one you looted from the Pilgrim), or do nothing. A blacksmith would serve you well so you must free Gerlinde, together with "Sparky" by handing over the Prison Cell key. After that, you can now return to Skyrest Bridge where Gerlinde will set up shop and take Sparky with her.

Once you have made your way to the shop, she will ask for your help to retrieve some items, or tablets created by Sparky. An odd duo, it appears that Sparky has been enslaved by Gerlinde and is wearing manacles that keep them from fighting back. As Gerlinde talks about Sparky, they will try to speak up and say "My name is not-" and then they will get cut off by Gerlinde again, dismissing them from further talking.

According to Gerlinde, Sparky possesses valuable knowledge in runesmithing that he refuses to share, hence, why Gerlinde enslaved them. Sparky carved all of their knowledge in crystal tablets and are scattered. Gerlinde insists that if you help her retrieve those, she can help you in runesmithing. Sparky makes a stand and will not tell you the locations of the tablets, even upon death, according to them.

Sparky's Scattered Tablets

As previously mentioned by Gerlinde, Sparky possesses valuable knowledge in runesmithing. All of these were carved into tablets and kept secret from Gerlinde. The Blacksmith will ask you to recover the following items in exchange for giving service that can give you stronger upgrades and increased Inventory:

  • Cracked Rune Tablet - Found inside Fitzroy's Gorge. This will unlock rune options.
  • Chipped Rune Tablet - Found in a house in Upper Calrath leading to Sunless Skein. This will unlock further rune options.
  • Rune Tablet - Found in a chest inside the Tower of Penance.

When you hand over the Cracked Rune Tablet to Gerlinde, Sparky will say that despite her skills, she is still selfish and avaricious. He shares the story of how she managed to create manacles that bound him to Gerlinde when he was weak and injured. It turns out, Sparky has lived eons before he was captured by Gerlinde and came ever so close to death that one time. When he was restored to health, he became Gerlinde's slave. He tells you that he only wants to taste freedom once again.

After giving the second tablet to Gerlinde, Sparky will ask that you deliver the final tablet to him. He tries to tell you that Gerlinde's callous hands and heart will only bring misery with the power of the runes. However, Gerlinde interrupts him and dismisses him from speaking once more. Gerlinde further shares that his life is bound to Gerlinde, that if ever she dies, Sparky will die with her.

Once you find the rune tablet, both Gerlinde and Sparky will ask you for the tablet. Sparky tells you that he only dreams of his freedom and if you give it to Gerlinde, she will have no use of him anymore. If you decide to give it to Sparky, he will be able to free himself from the manacles created by Gerlinde. As a reward, he will grant you the ability to perform runesmithing at Vestiges, this includes upgrading of equipment and socketing your own gear without going to Gerlinde. However, this will anger Gerlinde and her prices will double.

If you decide to give the tablet to Gerlinde, Sparky will disappear from your world forever after resting at a Vestige or traveling outside of Skyrest Bridge. Gerlinde will also reward the player with Crafter's Essence.

LOTF Sparky Notes & Trivia

  • Initially, Sparky's true identity is never revealed. Later in game there is a dialogue between him and Lampbearer that confirms he is The Crafter from Lords of the Fallen, who served the role as a blacksmith in that game.
  • Sparky is not who Gerlinde says he is. He once tried telling the Deathless One his true identity but Gerlinde shushed him.

    • For anyone wondering, the better choice is to give the final tablet to gerlinde. She gives you an OP item and doesn’t double her prices. Sparky’s gift is nice, but it doesn’t carry over into ng+ and it doesn’t let you do anything you can’t already do. All it does is save you the time of visiting skyrest whenever you need blacksmithing

I don’t think it should be speculation that Sparky is The Crafter. I think it’s pretty clear. He even talks about Harkyn. #FREEMYBOI

Is it worth freeing sparky if the cost for upgrades is now doubled? Or is it specifically the items she sells which are trash anyways.

If you give it the Rune Tablet to Sparky, the ability to "Runesmith" is being able to upgrade equipment and socket your own gear without having to go to Gerlinde.
