The Iron Wayfarer is an NPC in Lords of the Fallen. The Iron Wayfarer is a reserved man who initially warns you of the dangers of using the lamp as you see fit. He also serves as a guide for anything Umbral-related and will give information regarding the use of temporary Vestiges in both realms. NPCs interact with players in different ways, even giving them Quests and rewards as they complete them.

Lords of the Fallen The Iron Wayfarer Full Questline Walkthrough

Guide to Umbral Realm

You will first meet The Iron Wayfarer at the Abandoned Redcopse where he is seen standing next to the Vestige of Hannelore. He will give you a warning about using the Lamp as you see fit and should you take his warning lightly, you'll find that it's the other way around. After this meeting, you will find The Iron Wayfarer again at the cave in Redcopse Windmill. If you approach him here, he will tell you that history is bound to repeat itself over and over again, for as long as you are carrying the lamp with you. He hands over a Vestige Seed, which he suggests using if you don't want to keep walking in the same ground repeatedly.

The Vestige Seed is an item that can be used on a Umbral Flowerbed to create a temporary Vestige. This will also serve as a spawn point in case you die in the Umbral realm. A flowerbed can be identified by flowers laid out on the ground as well as accompanied by a ringing sound and a unique light emitting from the Umbral Lamp. If you want to use the Vestige Seed, simply walk on top of the Umbral Flowerbed, take out your Umbral Lamp by pressing the Down Button, raise it using L2, and then hold the Triangle Button to grow out the Vestige Seedling. Just like other Vestiges, a temporary Vestige can be warped or teleported.

His Final Stand

Upon reaching Lower Calrath, you will find The Iron Wayfarer standing on the right side of the main street. He tells you that he has heard that things have gotten bad in Mournstead, but he did not expect the chaos that it is today. He blames all of this on the presence of Adyr's rune and he will remind you once again that the lamp you carry is a burden, despite the boons that it brings. At this point, he gives you another advice that you alone should be the one to carry your burden (the Umbral Lamp), and never look to someone else to help you. This is the end of your interaction with The Iron Wayfarer for now.

You will encounter The Iron Wayfarer again at the end of the stairs in Upper Calrath. You find him talking to himself saying "No, this is wrong", as if he's seeing remnants that he finds unbelievable. He talks as if speaking to himself that he had to fight his way out of Mournstead... and that the vision is wrong, according to him. His last sentence is him declaring: "I'm not a monster." There is a nearby stigma here that will show you the same remnants in the Umbral Realm that The Iron Wayfarer is seeing. It turns out that he butchered civilians and left a bloody carnage in his trail.

As you explore the streets of Upper Calrath, The Iron Wayfarer moves once again to the interior of this path where there are 2 lit braziers on each side of the doorway. We noticed that he moved into this area after the second beacon was cleansed in Upper Calrath. There's a stigma in front of The Iron Wayfarer, and upon interacting with it, the remnants show the figure of The Iron Wayfarer handing over the Rune of Adyr to another. If you talk to The Iron Wayfarer, he will give context to the remnants that you are seeing.

It turns out that The Iron Wayfarer has decided to give the Rune of Adyr to Judge Cleric, and he said that it was this decision that he damned the entire kingdom for generations to come. The Iron Wayfarer explains that he was tired, was never a man of faith, and thought it was best to entrust the rune to a judge. The Iron Wayfarer thought that Judge Cleric would be able to destroy the rune or prevent the catastrophe it had brought from happening. The Iron Wayfarer still blames himself for that one decision, wherein he looked to somebody else to carry their burden.

Once you reach the Vestige of Ferrers the Charred, rest at the Vestige and The Iron Wayfarer will move Locations once again. You will find him at the edge of the cliff next to the Vestige, overlooking the land before him. He tells you that the Rune of Adyr is close and he intends on taking it back. He claims that the rune is his, and his temperament has changed since your last interaction. After what he has seen, it seems that he has come to the conclusion that there's no salvation or redemption for anyone in Mournstead. He went from wanting to save the kingdom to wanting Mournstead to burn and every life in it.

As you get closer to the Rune of Adyr, The Iron Wayfarer stands close by. In the Abbey of the Lucent Sisters, the Rune of Adyr is held on display. Once you interact with it, a cutscene will play where the Rapturous Huntress of the Dusk drops from the ceiling. Then, a dark figure emerges from the back, dividing the attention of the Boss. The Iron Wayfarer has been in search of the Rune of Adyr and he has kept true to his word. He will fight the Rapturous Huntress of the Dusk with you, and upon defeat, he will claim the Rune of Adyr, He will give you another piece of advice, "Just remember, in the end, you're better off alone." Then, he goes missing together with the Rune of Adyr.

NOTE: The Iron Wayfarer will only help you out in this fight if you follow all the steps that we have indicated above.

After The Iron Wayfarer steals the Rune of Adyr, you will encounter him again at the gates of Bramis Castle and become a secondary Boss. When defeated, the Iron Wayfarer drops the following items:

After defeating The Iron Wayfarer, he can be found in the Fief of the Chill Curse on a snowy ledge overlooking the valley where the beacon tower lies. He can only be seen in the Umbral Realm. To find him, begin from the Vestige of Svornil, and access the ladders to reach the upper platforms. You will soon find yourself on the same road that we used when we first traversed this area.

This is the pathway filled with carriages and barrels. Follow the long road and eventually pass the wooden bridge, you will reach a barricaded gate where a ladder is situated near it. Access the ladder and the banner of the area will be displayed. Access the nearest stairs and transfer to Umbral. Follow the cliffs and eventually, you will find the Iron Wayfarer. Interact with him and use the Withered Rune of Adyr. This will end him and grant the player Harkyn's Umbral Parasite. This is a key item that is required to further progress the Umbral Ending.

**** whoever made this bossfight. A shitfeast of crap camera movement, particellar effects, and idiotic AI thaf spams aoe attacks in a narrow alley.

      • It's worth noting that even if you do the Inferno ending(assumedly radiant, too? Idk) he still shows up at the fief in the same spot. Has some dialogue and then you learn the "surrender" gesture.

        • Anonymous

Not the first to say it but its important. He wll appear in both Forsaken Fen and Windmill area until you exit the game and then restart, then and only then he appears in Lower Calrath.
Talking and killing the Visage in Fen , then getting the quest item afterwards didnt do anything for me but it might be required.

          • Anonymous

a bit of advice to his quest:
            - his umbral-only fen encounter is completely optional
            - you can trigger both upper calrath encounters by quitting the game in-between
            - it appears that the associated stigmata at those encounters are mandatory to use to habe him progress (they might as well not, needs confirmation)
            - his armour only drops if he acquires adyr's rune. to ensure he does, make sure he shows up at the pre-manse vestige and rest to reload and have him disappear (i missed resting once and he didn't show up during the huntress boss)

Whelp, I spoiled the story for myself, agonized over every step, and tried desperately to tiptoe through the IDIOTIC series of precise requirements to get the umbral ending, but oops I missed a conversation with him so eff me I guess better play the whole half-broken game again if I want to try another time

              • Anonymous

On first playthrough doing radiance ending this guy has a pretty lame ending to the story. You randomly fight him in a small hallway essentially, no cutscene, no phase transition other than just having blue eyes basically. Would have expected much more badassery from this one

                • Anonymous

I don't understand what I did wrong. I talked to him at the end of upper calrath by the ladder and saw him again at the other vestige but he never jumped jn during the Huntress fight. oh we'll, I don't want to do the umbral ending yet anyway.

                  • Anonymous

it is not mentioned here, but you get the armor of the Iron Wayfarer if you do umbral ending, use withered rune on him, then go switch back to axiom at the gate and go to where you used the withered rune of adyr on him you will get the armor there ;)

                    • Anonymous

Harken is apparently burdened by the Rune of Adyr, but what I don’t understand is why doesn’t he just give the rune to the Crafter? It was an option in the original game and, as an inter-dimensional traveler, the Crafter can place the Rune somewhere no one will be able to reach it.

Killed lightreaper right away in ng+0 and iron Wayfarer took something out of the light reapers chest. Did that happen in ng or ...?

                        • Anonymous

I'm not seeing the part where he shows up in the Forsaken Fen. That might be what people are missing in his questline.

                          • Anonymous

He's stuck saying "I'm not a monster" and the stigma that shows him handing over the rune to the Judge is not appearing. Reloading the area makes him briefly spawn where he should be, but he still repeats the previous line, and then disappears back to his previous spot as soon as I step out of the room.

Got his set and achievement after using withered ruin of adyr on him. If you don’t see it, try reloading the game.

seems like he is bugged. i used the withered rune on him for the umbral ending, but he didnt drop his armor and i also didnt get his achievement

For the ppl who are looking Iron Wayfarer in winter location for Umbral ending.
From the first vestige of the winter location "Fief: Vestige of Svornil" take a "regular" road, just wich you first went when you came in this location.
As you going your route, there will be archer and a few dogs, and there you are using a ladder to climb on the wall.
So Wayfarer will be standing at the edge of the cliff after this wall.

In upper carlath, after each interaction reset the area. He's found in the middle of the stairs after an area from the arena before beacon. Reset and he moves to the room before the ladder to the shortcut to the bridge.

So we have to KILL the Hero of the first game, always? Wow that suxx.
The first LotF had such sh°tty mechanics it pissed me off the entire time but I really liked Harkyn as a character.
Does not sit right with me that we have to kill him no matter what. Bad writing.
