Pieta, She of Blessed Renewal LOTF Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Pieta, She of Blessed Renewal:

For this fight, players will be able to seek assistance from the Iron Wayfarer before traversing into the boss arena. Pieta is first fought on foot with her long sword. She has the ability to inflict Smite with her attacks. Her long sword has a far reach. You will need to roll through these initial standard sword attacks to gain a better position on her. Players can also Soulflay her to heavily decrease her poise.

If you keep a distance, she will slowly approach. You can prepare your counter just as she reaches your proximity. Dodge toward her and prepare for a potential follow-up to her combo and then wait for her attack animation to finish before beginning your attacks. Her larger attacks will have a brief pause, allowing you to attack freely from behind before her next action.

Phase 2

Once you clear the first phase, her second phase will begin once her health reaches about three-quarters. Her attacks will be enhanced for this phase and she will have a new moveset with her wings. Her attacks during this phase will cover larger areas, so you will need to pay close attention to your own character's position at all times and Pieta's line of sight. Your positioning options will be limited to avoid her AoE attacks during this phase. Her melee attacks will have a larger range, but her standard attacks will now also be accompanied by a number of new ranged and AoE attacks. This time, she will be able to swoop down from her aerial position, leaving a trail of smite seeping through from the cracks on the ground. This attack encompasses a wide area. You will need to seek refuge on either side of the direction of this attack to avoid Smite build-up.

One attack you will be able to anticipate is her rain of Smite Swords. You will be able to see the swords hover in the area before raining down one large section at a time. Run out from the range of the swords to avoid damage and stay in the clear. This time in the fight. it will be harder to control the arena and position yourself close to her. You will need to wait out her larger attacks and wait for her approach. It's best to start attacking in between her melee attacks. Much like the first phase, her larger attacks will give you a brief moment to run in and attack before her next attack. Even as she deals with her larger AoE or ranged attacks, she will sometimes be vulnerable as the attack animation plays out. Watch for when she strikes the ground. This puts her in a perfect position for our additional attacks. Be patient and wait for her approach while focusing on avoiding the larger attacks then look out for the attack windows and stay close following her melee attacks to slowly deplete her health until she is defeated.

Pieta, She of Blessed Renewal Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Stab She lunges forward and thrusts her sword out for a stab. Dodge away or block her melee attacks.
Sweep A sweeping swing of her sword that can be performed in a back-to-back combo.  Dodge away, or through, or block her melee attacks.
Smite Beam She holds up her weapon in the air before releasing a linear beam attack that can build up Smite.  Run out of the direction of this linear attack.
Jump Swing A jump swing attack where she swings her sword down to the ground and leaves a spot where Smite can affect you.  An attack that can be avoided by sidestepping or keeping a distance.
Phase 2
Aerial Melee Attacks A combination of her standard melee strikes and swings but dealt from a higher elevation and with a further reach Dodge through the attack and try to stay close to follow up
Aerial Lunge Attack She lunges forward with her sword while suspended in the air.  Dodge through the attack and try to stay close to follow up
Swoop Dive With her wings, she can now dive in at a lower elevation, causing damage if you're caught in her path.  This attack is linear. You can dodge to either side to avoid damage
Rain of Suspended Swords A number of swords will be suspended at above the player and they will fall one section at a time Look out for where the suspended swords are and run out from the area of effect
Double Sword Projectiles A ranged attack. She has the ability to launch a couple of swords forward. Circle around her to avoid these ranged attacks. This will also prepare you for her follow-up sword line attack.
Line of Swords This attack usually follows the double-edged ranged attack. Swords will begin to fall forward in a line.  This attack is linear and can be avoided if you stay out of the anticipated path. Watch for where the projectile swords land and steer clear.
Specter Temporarily releases a double that can deal a melee attack from an alternate position.  Dodge or Block the incoming attack.
Double Winged Specter Releases two doubles that can both dive in a line and leave a trail of falling smite swords Players will have no choice but to look for the gap to avoid the path of the Specters to avoid being affected by the attack.
Double Specter Beam Releases two specter clones that will shoot out a beam that would inflict damage and Smite.  A double linear attack. As long as you steer clear from where the specter's swords are pointing, you'll be able to avoid damage.

    • Strong against physical. Why yes, not that 90% damage a player can deal at this point is physical. That's why that fight is such a slog. She is not hard, she is just too tedious for a 1st boss if you cant parry

I'm normally the guy to get super frustrated with bosses in games. For some reason, this boss didn't bug me. I died a lot, sure. But I never felt like it was bs. Her fight was super satisfying to learn and when I finally conquered her I felt accomplished.

        TL;DR Git gud

Don’t forget to add the phase two grab and stab attack to the novel that is this tutorial bosses move set.

Probably the worst "tutorial" boss in the history of gaming. I swear I'm at around midgame and nobody came close to her yet in terms of difficulty. 3 measly heals healing less than full HP, no means to harm her using special dmg as you can't really "force loot" previous areas. You just have to be persistent af and defeat her somehow. Super unbalanced boss. Took some 20+ runs for us, and I played and beat most souls and souls-like titles. This boss is easily the hardest "first" boss. I know technically she's not the first in the game, but everything before her is very short and progress route is linear, she's defending the hub after all. Both DS 1-2-3 was way easier or shorter up to that point, Demon's souls much easier, Nioh 1-2, Code Vein, nothing comes close. Bloodborne had a pretty damn difficult first boss on the bridge, but Pieta is worse.
Takes away the joy and fun even if you're a veteran, let alone someone who wants to give this genre a shot.
LOTF2 is a very buggy game, crashes a lot in coop but when it's running well and plays as intended, it's pretty damn good actually.

They definitely nerfed her a bit on the recent patch. Definitely not as difficult as first time around (I restarted the game for a different build)

Case of alot of "Get Guds" in this discussion. Instead of whining just strafe around and dodge for the first minute. All of her attacks are delayed and heavily choreographed.

Well, **** me. Just tried her with my second character. She´s a tough cookie, alright. But I didn´t take this much time last time. Fighting her with a longsword and heavy armour is certainly MUCH easier. Made the mistake to try out the inferno starter and damn, one mistake and my HP melt away. Also the crusader can throw healing at the Iron Wayfarer to heal him up a bit. Without that, the moment she enters phase two he´s ****ed. Her regular attacks are easy enough to parry, but the mix-ups get me time and again. Seriously considering power-levelling that pitiful Lv. 16 witch so I can survive more than one or two hits... +sigh+ Had NO idea how priviliged my spoiled ass was when I started with the crusader ! If only anyone would be available for summon. Seriously the first time I even tried to summon anyone for a boss in this game. Oh, the shame. Usually I do the "sun bro" for others. I guess at that low level nobody is queing for co-op. Well, I repeat : **** my life XD

Pieta was buffed in most recent patch today. Beat her within 1-3 tries on 3 previous characters- but this time on a new character today I’m struggling with her after dying 8 times so far, only whittling her health down to about half. This new character is a Warwolf w/ the starting sword which is good, have 20 Strength and 21 Vit, level 30- and I’m now struggling like I haven’t before on the 3 previous characters. She now hits harder, and has higher health. Have no idea why they would buff her?!

                    • it makes zero sense that her sword rain follows after her swoop attack. The attack you just avoided. The swords should come down left and right of the swoop! Where we naturally stand now. Save. And bored to death.

so funny how many people are having problems with this boss lol I get it if your complete beginner at this kind of game or have big FPS problems but some one who has at least some exp in DS games similar games hud not have problems dealing with her lol And advice for all who finally beat her and still say she is hard - dont go for Umbral ending lol

Watch out for her swoop/grab attack in phase 2, it can one shot you. Try rolling through her attacks, if timed right, you probably won't get hit. Don't be fooled into thinking she's easy, a very difficult first boss. Most of her melee attacks can hit all directions, even if you're at (what feels like) a safe distance away.

                          • Parry her first stage, don't bother normally attacking unless she's doing the slam, dodge/move the slam, 2nd stage just hit her when she has finished her combo, otherwise focus on dodging/moving, very rarely you get an actual chance to parry.

                            • A great way to make this fight trial it requires a bit of work but sets you up for most of the early areas/bosses if you accompany someone and purchase the 1st wither spell it just melts away her health I had her down to about 40% before she sprouted her wings

                              • Great way to make this fight trivial requires a bit of work but if you accompany someone and purchase the first withering spell it just melts away her health bar I had her down to about 40% before she sprouted her wings

Love how her voice changes after she transforms.
Also weird how as an NPC she loses a lot of height, guess it's the consequence of dying.

A slow, heavy hitting weapon (such as Paladin Isaac's Sword) will keep her stunlocked during phase 1 and interrupt pretty much all of her attacks, if you connect fully charged heavy attacks. Space them out a bit to regenerate stamina or use items to help.

                                    • There are no hitbox problems, the weapon hitbox and the enemy model hitboxes are exactly the same as the model itself.
If go too close for smaller enemies you will miss most of your attacks, because your weapon actually didn't hit 'em, same with bigger enemies, you have just poor depth perseption imagination for 3D games, so you think you should've gotten a hit in, but actually nope. Just turn the camera side ways if you think otherwise.

                                      • You can summon an npc for her fight, though don't know if you have to die for it, or just quitting out of the fight or using items to teleport away from the fight will make the summon npc spot appear.

I'm going insane from the frustration of attacks not doing damage due to hitbox on phase 2 is there a patch for this?

                                          • Anonymous

Not sure if my game is glitched or the hitboxes are terrible. At least half of my attacks aren't registering despite clearly hitting her.
If it's actually a hitbox issue and it's going to be this bad for the rest of the game, I doubt I'll have the patience to finish it
